Thomas Campbell manuscript material : 66 items 1803-1844

Thomas Campbell, Scottish poet. He achieved fame with the publication of his Pleasures of Hope (1799), a long poem denouncing slavery and oppression, and served as editor of the New Monthly Magazine from 1820 to 1830. Campbell wrote biographies of the actress Sarah Siddons (1834) and Petrarch (1841), and did much work to promote British support for Polish independence. The manuscript material by Thomas Campbell in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings include: an incomplete draft of his Life of Petrarch; a holograph poem, "Verses on a Fan," written for Lord Byron's mistress, Teresa Guiccioli; and laundry and expense lists. The bulk of the correspondence is from 1840-1841, and discusses publishing matters, family issues, and his efforts toward the liberation of Poland. Correspondents include: Richard Bentley, publisher; the Rev. William Harness, literary scholar; John Murray, publisher; and over two dozen others.
