Politician, reformer, and author Robert Dale Owen was born in Scotland; influenced by his father, he developed a strong interest in social reform. He moved to New Harmony, Indiana, where he joined the socialist community his father founded there, and he was active as an educator, editor, and author, including the first birth control pamphlet published in America. He next became active in politics, serving in the Indiana House of Representatives and later in the United States House, where he was a guiding force in founding the Smithsonian Institution. An influential thinker and writer on diverse complex issues, he was especially active in women's rights and the abolition of slavery. In his later years, he developed a belief in spiritualism.

Owen was the eldest son of Robert Owen, social reformer and founder of New Harmony, Ind. He served in the Indiana General Assembly (1836-1838; 1851) and the U.S. House of Representatives (1843-1847). During the Civil War he advocated emancipation, and at the time of this collection was writing a novel, BEYOND THE BREAKERS.

Robert Dale Owen (November 7, 1801-June 24, 1877), a native of Scotland, emigrated to the United States in 1825 to help his father found a utopian community in Indiana.

As a Representative for the State of Indiana, he drafted the bill to found the Smithsonian Insititution and also submitted a first draft of the fourteenth amendment in 1865, which was incorporated into the final version.
