The Browne family papers are primarily of Albert Gallatin Browne, a ship chandler in Salem, Massachusetts, and an agent of the United States Treasury Department in Beaufort, South Carolina, during the Civil War, his wife Sarah Smith Cox Browne, and their children, Albert Gallatin, Jr., a lawyer and journalist; Sarah Ellen (Nellie), a nurse of wounded soldiers at a military hospital in Beaufort; Alice; and Edward.
