Edward Alexander McDowell, American composer, pianist, and teacher, was born in New York on Dec. 18, 1860. He began the study of music as a child with Juan Buitrago and Teresa Carreño, then traveled to Paris in 1876 to study at the Conservatoire with Marmontel. Further study continued in Germany in 1878 with Carl Heymann and Raff. By 1880 he was supporting himself as a piano teacher, which he did until 1885. In 1884 he married Marian Nevins, and they eventually settled in New York. MacDowell taught at Columbia University until 1904. The MacDowells founded the MacDowell Colony at their farm in Peterborough, N.H. to encourage developing artists. His health began to fail in 1905 and declined until his death in New York, on Jan. 23, 1908.
