Edwin Lawrence Godkin was an author, journalist, and editor. Born in Ireland, he covered the Crimean War for the London Daily News, later moving to New York. He ws invited to become co-founder and editor of The Nation which, under his guidance, became one of the most influential publications of its era, impacting politics and culture beyond its modest circulation. Godkin was a passionate writer and editor, with a witty, straightforward style and a liberal outlook.
