Catalan violoncellist.
Catalan cellist, conductor, pianist, and composer.
Epithet: cellist and composer
Violoncellist.
Dr Ernest Murray and his wife Blanche lived in Budapest, Hungary during the 1930s.
Pablo Casals was a Catalan violoncellist.
Alan Shulman was a composer, cellist and arranger. Born in Baltimore on June 4, 1915, his early studies were with Bart Wirtz (cello) and Louis Cheslock (harmony) at the Peabody Conservatory.
In 1928 the family moved to New York, where Shulman played in the National Orchestral Association under Leon Barzin. He received a New York Philharmonic Scholarship, studying cello with Joseph Emonts and harmony with Winthrop Sargent. From 1932-1937, he attended the Juilliard School where he was a fellowship student, studying cello with Felix Salmond and composition with Bernard Wagenaar. While still a student, he composed music for the American Children's Theatre production of Hans Christian Anderson's The Chinese Nightingale (1934). He continued his studies of cello with Emanuel Feuermann, and of composition with Paul Hindemith.
Shulman was the cellist of the Kreiner String Quartet (1935-38). Later, he and his brother, violinist/conductor Sylvan Shulman, co-founded the Stuyvesant String Quartet. During the 1940s and 1950s this group was noted for its performances and recordings of contemporary quartets of Bloch, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Malipiero, Hindemith and Kreisler, among others. In 1941 they played the American premiere of the Shostakovich Piano Quintet at Carnegie Hall (on a bill which included Benny Goodman), and recorded it for Columbia Records.
Simultaneously with his Kreiner Quartet activities, Shulman was arranging and performing classical themes in a jazz style with an ensemble consisting of string quartet, bass, guitar and harp. The group, called the New Friends of Rhythm, recorded for RCA Victor and sold 20,000 records in 1939 and 1940. They recorded with Buster Bailey for Victor before World War II, and with Maxine Sullivan for International Records after the war.
Shulman was a charter member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini from 1937-1942, served in the U.S. Maritime Service from 1942-1945, and rejoined NBC from 1948-1954. While in the Maritime Service, he taught orchestration to Nelson Riddle, who went on to write celebrated arrangements for Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat "King" Cole. After NBC disbanded the Symphony in 1954, he helped form and manage the group's short-lived successor, the Symphony of the Air.
During the 1930s and 1940s Shulman was active as an arranger for Leo Reisman, Andre Kostalanetz, Arthur Fiedler and Wilfred Pelletier's Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air. Later, Shulman worked with opera singer Risë Stevens, producing "crossover" arrangements for her which she recorded from 1945-1947.
Shulman's first successful composition was Theme and Variations for Viola and Orchestra, which received its première over NBC in 1941 with Emanuel Vardi as soloist. The piece was recorded several times and is in the repertoire of most American viola soloists. Among his many successful compositions are the Suite on American Folk Songs (one movement of which, Cod Liver 'Ile, was recorded by Jascha Heifetz); Waltzes for Orchestra, premiered by the NBC Symphony with Milton Katims conducting; Threnody (For the Fallen Soldiers of Israel), premiered by the NBC String Quartet in February, 1950; Rendezvous, written for Benny Goodman and recorded by Artie Shaw and Richard Stoltzman; and the Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, premiered by Leonard Rose with the New York Philharmonic under Dimitri Mitropoulos. His Suite Miniature for Octet of Celli was written in 1956 for the Fine Arts Cello Ensemble of Los Angeles.
In the 1950s, Shulman wrote popular songs with entertainer Steve Allen and arranged for Skitch Henderson, Raoul Poliakin and Felix Slatkin. During the 1960s and 1970s, Shulman was busy in recording and television studios, and composed teaching material and works for band including Three Faces of Glen Cove, Interstate 90, The Corn Shuckers and Mazatlan, and arranged for singer-songwriter Cris Williamson's debut recording on Ampex Records.
Shulman founded the Violoncello Society in 1956 and was President from 1967 to 1972. He was cellist of the Philharmonia Trio (1962-1969), the Vardi Trio, An Die Musik (1976-1977), and the Haydn Quartet (1972-1982). Shulman taught cello at Sarah Lawrence College, Juilliard, SUNY-Purchase, Johnson State College (Vermont) and the University of Maine. He was made a Chevalier du Violoncelle by the Eva Janzer Cello Center at Indiana University in 1997. Shulman died on July 10, 2002.

Spanish Refugee Aid (Organization). Spanish Refugee Aid Records 1941-2006 (bulk 1953-1983).
Title:
Spanish Refugee Aid Records 1941-2006 (bulk 1953-1983).
Spanish Refugee Aid (SRA) was founded in 1953 to assist refugees of the Spanish Civil War who were then residing in France. Nancy Macdonald (1910-1996) was the leading figure in the founding of Spanish Refugee Aid and remained at the organization's helm until her retirement in 1983. SRA maintained an office in New York City and coordinated aid efforts in France from Paris, Toulouse and Montauban. Between 1953 and 2006 when SRA, by then a program of the International Rescue Committee, was dissolved, ... Emmet family papers
Title:
Emmet family papers
The Emmet Family papers document the lives and careers of two generations of the Emmet family from New Rochelle, New York and Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The collection dates from 1792 to 1989, with the bulk of the material dating from 1851-1989, and measures 9.1 linear feet. Through biographical material, two diaries, correspondence, writings and notes, exhibition files, business records, printed material, two scrapbooks, artwork, and photographs of family, friends, exhibitions, and artwork, the papers provide both a rich overview and detailed insights into the daily lives, relationships, and careers of many members of the family. The collection focuses in particular on sisters Lydia Field Emmet, Jane Erin Emmet de Glehn, and Rosina Emmet Sherwood, their mother, Julia Colt Pierson Emmet, and their cousin Ellen Gertrude "Bay" Emmet, all noted painters and illustrators, whose artistic talents flourished during the late nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries.Biographical material consists of family trees and family histories; individual biographical accounts, award certificates, and documentation for Julia Colt Pierson Emmet, Rosina Emmet Sherwood, Lydia Field Emmet, Jane Erin Emmet de Glehn, and Wilfrid de Glehn; a diary titled "Sedgemere Diary" containing drawings and entries primarily by Rosina Emmet Sherwood, and a smaller diary which mentions Rosina's son, future playwright Robert Sherwood; a documentary by Nancy B. Doyle on two VHS videocassettes, entitled <emph render="italic">The Emmets: Portrait of a Family</emph>; and artifacts comprising a rear-view optical device and locks of hair from an early nineteenth century generation of the Emmet family.Correspondence forms the bulk of the collection and illustrates the interaction between members of this large and influential family and their colleagues and friends, offering a wide-ranging view of life in the late nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries, and through two World Wars. The series consists of letters between family members, primarily Julia Colt Pierson Emmet and her daughters, as well as cousins Henry James, Ellen "Bay" Emmet Rand, and Rosamond Sherwood, and friends Cecilia Beaux, Louis Bancel LaFarge, Frederick MacMonnies, Lucien Monod, Roger Quilter, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Emily and John Singer-Sargent, Violet Sargent Ormond, and Stanford White. Topics include experiences of the Emmets while studying art in Paris, Rosina's presentation at Queen Victoria's court, Lydia's work at the Columbia Exposition, Jane's marriage to Wilfrid de Glehn and her friendship with John Singer Sargent, portrait painting activities, the troubles of their friend Susy Metcalfe in her marriage to Pablo Casals, and the activities of Rosina's son, playwright Robert Emmet Sherwood, and friends Alfred Lund and Lynn Fontanne. Writings and notes consist of scattered manuscripts and poems by family members, two notebooks, one identified as belonging to Jane Erin Emmet de Glehn, and typescripts about Wilfrid de Glehn following his death. Also found is a book, <emph render="italic">Out of Town</emph>, written and illustrated by Rosina Emmet Sherwood, and Edna St Vincent Millay's poem "Autum Daybreak" written in Millay's handwriting.Exhibition files document an exhibition held at the Berkshire Museum/Danforth Museum in Pittsfield/Farmingham, Massachusetts in 1982 entitled <emph render="italic">The Emmets: A Family of Women Painters</emph>, and include two audio cassettes of recordings from the "Art for Lunch" series at the Berkshire Museum discussing the exhibition.Business records include account books belonging to Lydia Field Emmet and Rosina Emmet Sherwood, both of which document income from artwork and other sources, and expenses; a contract for the reproduction of Lydia Field Emmet's artwork; and a document concerning ownership of property, possibly of Emmet family ancestors.Printed Material consists of clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, and reproductions of artwork by Emmet family members and others. Two scrapbooks contain a combination of drawings, primarily by Rosina Emmet Sherwood, reproductions of artwork, and photographs.Artwork includes drawings and sketchbooks by Julia Colt Pierson Emmet, Rosina Emmet Sherwood, Lydia Field Emmet, Jane Erin Emmet de Glehn Ellen Emmet Rand, and other Emmet relatives, illustrating the early development of their talent.Photographs are of family members, including Julia Colt Pierson Emmet and William Jenkins Emmet, their daughters Lydia Field Emmet, Jane Erin Emmet de Glehn and husband Wilfrid de Glehn, Rosina Emmet Sherwood and husband Arthur Murray Sherwood, and Robert Emmet Sherwood as a young man. Also found are photos of friends Richard Harding Davis, Frederick MacMonnies, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens; a series of photographs of the installation at Arden Galleries, New York (1936) for the exhibition <emph render="italic">Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures by Five Generations of the Emmet Family</emph>; and photographs of artwork by Emmet family members.

Jack Lund Collection, 1887-2009
Title:
Jack Lund Collection 1887-2009
The Jack Lund Collection contains personal papers of Jack Lund as well as numerous newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, and music books. It also contains Lund's collection of classical music on 78 rpm discs, mostly in albums, 33 1/3 rpm long playing discs, and a small number of open reel tapes. The materials in this collection document the principal musical interests of Mr. Lund, i.e. vocal solo music, opera, careers and performances of specific singers and pianists, and the career of Arturo Toscanini. Since Mr. Lund mantained personal friendships with many musicians he admired, he acquired autographed photographs of these artists, and he regularly corresponded with them. The photographs and many of the letters from these musicians are included in the collection. As an avid reader of published articles and books on musical topics, Mr. Lund collected newspaper clippings and books about specific musicians, and he also corresponded with the authors of these writings. Letters received from these authors and a large number of clippings are also included in the collection. Some copies of journals and newsletters, which were included in the donated collection, have been retained in order to provide a broader context to Mr. Lund's musical interests and pursuits.

William Francis Gray Swann Papers, 1903-1962
Title:
William Francis Gray Swann Papers 1903-1962
The physicist W.F.G. Swann was a pioneer in high energy physics and the study of cosmic rays. Climbing the academic ranks from the University of Sheffield to the Universities of Minnesota, Chicago, and Yale, Swann was selected as the first director of the Bartol Research Foundation of the Franklin Institute in 1927, and remained there until his retirement in 1959. An able administrator and excellent mentor, he was best known for his popular work on the new physics, The Architecture of the Universe (1934) and for his research on cosmic rays. Avocationally, he was an accomplished cellist and in addition to performing, he helped organize and support the Swarthmore Symphony Orchestra and other local groups. He died at his home in Swarthmore in 1962. The Swann Papers consist of 41 linear feet of correspondence, class notes, lectures, and photographs documenting Swann's career at the Bartol Research Foundation from 1927 until the end of his life. The collection is wide ranging, touching on atmospheric electricity, particle acceleration, atomic bomb defense, atomic energy, electrets, electrodynamics, magnetism, music, quantum theory, radiation, relativity and Einstein, science and civilization, stratospheric flights (by balloon and airplane), thermodynamics, psychic science, and wave mechanics. It is particularly rich for study of the history of cosmic ray research and the Bartol Institute, and for study of the popularization of modern physical sciences.

Interlochen Center for the Arts. Interlochen Center for the Arts records, ca.1880-[ongoing].
Title:
Interlochen Center for the Arts records, ca.1880-[ongoing].
The collection consists of the records of Interlochen (1927-present) and the personal papers (ca. 1880-1966) of Joseph Maddy. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Chronological, Subject, Later Administrators, Boards, Recent Leaders, Printed, Visual Materials, Sound Recordings, and Scrapbooks. The Chronological series focuses on Maddy and the Camp until 1966, while the Subject series, though heavily relating to Maddy, also includes much on developments through 1989. The Later Administrators series begins in the late 1950s when Maddy expanded the staff in anticipation of making Interlochen a year-round institution and ends in 1989 when the last major leader from the Maddy era retired. Boards (governing bodies) starts with the Camp's founding in 1928 and ends in 1989. Recent Leaders documents developments from 1989 on. Printed offers coverage to the present but is more complete for the early years through the 1980s. While the Visual Materials and Sound Recordings series extend from the 1920s into the 1980s, they offer best coverage from 1924 to 1942. Scrapbooks, with gaps in the early years, documents both Maddy and the Camp, beginning with the National High School Orchestra and ending with the Camp's 50th anniversary celebration in 1978. The Subject series includes documentation of the dispute between Maddy and James C. Petrillo, head of the American Federation of Musicians, over the use of non-union amateur musicians in the radio broadcasts of Interlochen performances. Correspondents represented in the collection consist of individuals famed in musical performance. Included are Percy Grainger, Frederic Fennell, Ferdé Grofe, Pablo Casals, Howard Hanson, Jascha Heifitz, Paul Whiteman, Lorin Maazel, Eugene Ormandy, and Jan Sibelius. Other fields and individuals represented include music education: Peter Dykema and Will Earhart; educational broadcasting: W. W. Charters and Edgar B. Gordon; commercial broadcasting: Franklin Dunham and Judith Waller; business: S. S. Kresge and the Alden and Herbert Dow family; and politics: Wilber Brucker, Samuel Insull, and Arthur Vandenberg.

A.P. Schmidt Company. A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
Title:
A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
The A.P. Schmidt Company archives contains music, correspondence, business and financial records, and related documents. These materials provide a detailed look at the management, daily operations, and history of the Schmidt firm. In the music series, which contains manuscripts and some printed music and is the largest part of the collection, are examples of music composed by Americans at the turn of the twentieth century and selected for publication by Schmidt. The majority of the music in the collection is in autograph form; some are holographs in the hand of the composer and many are the work of Schmidt company editors and arrangers. It is from these manuscripts that the Schmidt company prepared its publications. The music in the collection is principally for voice, chorus or piano, with some examples of large-scale orchestral music as well. It should be noted that none of the manuscripts of Edward MacDowell, one of Schmidt's most important composers, accompanied the collection to the Library of Congress. It may be assumed that after MacDowell's death, most of his manuscripts were returned to his widow, Marian MacDowell (see the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection). Among the major correspondents in the collection are Edward Ballantine, Florence Newell Barbour, Floy Bartlett, Mrs. H.H.A. Beach, Robert Braine, Gena Branscombe, F. Leslie Calver,Rosseter G. Smyth, Ethel, 1858-1944. Ethel Smyth collection, 1910-1962.
Title:
Ethel Smyth collection, 1910-1962.
Collection includes: manuscripts and diaries by Ethel Smyth, printed material, and research notes about her. Included in the manuscripts are several items of outgoing correspondence, primarily addressed to Scottish composer and conductor, Donald Tovey. Other addressees include Gordon Bryan, Philip Heseltine (aka Peter Warlock), Lady Constance Lytton, and Herbert Van Thal. The collection also includes three typescripts: three chapters of Smyth's unpublished last autobiographical work; a draft of a 1938 BBC radio speech given on Smyth's 80th birthday; and the annotated lyrics to her opera, The Prison. A small fragment of Smyth's Concerto for Violin, Horn, and Orchestra holds a portion of a composition by Frederic H. Cowen on the verso. Printed material includes programs, clippings, and a pamphlet containing the lyrics of March of the Women. Smyth's diaries are heavily annotated and provide a descriptive narrative of her life and work. The diaries mention members of her social circle, such as Sir Thomas Beecham, Pablo Casals, Empress Eugenie, Edith Somerville, Lady Ponsonby, Maurice Baring, Betty Balfour, and Virginia Woolf. Two notebooks of research notes taken by Smyth's biographer, Christopher St. John, round out the collection.

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Committee to Secure Justice for Morton Sobell. Committee to Secure Justice for Morton Sobell records, 1946-1969.
Title:
Committee to Secure Justice for Morton Sobell records, 1946-1969.
Records of the national organization formed in 1951 to publicize the cases of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and Morton Sobell. Early efforts of the committee centered on securing clemency for the Rosenbergs; after their execution for communist espionage, efforts concentrated on effecting Sobell's release from prison. After serving 19 years in prison, Sobell was released in January 1969. The records document the committee's activities from its inception to Sobell's release and relate not only to the case itself, but also to the lives of the Sobells during his long imprisonment. The majority of the collection is available in a microfilm edition, The Records of the Committee to Secure Justice for Morton Sobell (Brookhaven Press, 1976). (A copy is available in the SHSW Library.). Subject files containing correspondence arranged by individual, organization, or geographic area form the bulk of the collection. Also incorporated here are correspondence, circulars, and statements of the national committee, scattered information about the Rosenbergs, and personal and committee correspondence of Morton and Helen Sobell. Legal records include correspondence from Marshall Perlin, William Kunstler, and others, and printed and mimeographed legal documents. Smaller sections of the filmed collection include fragmentary financial records and uncopyrighted publications. Since the Brookhaven publication, the committee's clipping file has been microfilmed by the Historical Society. The remainder of the collection consists of photographs, posters, and video and sound recordings of committee members and supporters. Prominent individuals represented in the collection include Dean Acheson, Marian Anderson, Carlton Beals, Cedric Belfrage, Martin Buber, Pablo Casals, Roy M. Cohn, David Dellinger, W.E.B. DuBois, T.S. Eliot, Jules Feiffer, Erich Fromm, J. Anka, Paul. Musicians Collection, 1727-1981, (bulk 1900-1940).
Title:
Musicians Collection, 1727-1981, (bulk 1900-1940).
Consists of ca. 4900 items which are primarily of a visual nature and portray approximately 1700 musicians and musical groups: classical composers, conductors, soloists, and ensembles; big bands and bandleaders; bandmasters; impresarios; vaudeville artists, minstrel show performers, and other variety acts; twentieth-century American musical theater composers; and post-1940 popular singers and musical groups, including country singers. Photographs comprise about 95% of the collection. Other formats present are engravings, lithographs, clippings, concert programs, brochures, booklets, sheet music, vocal and instrumental scores, drawings, paintings, postcards, correspondence, posters, and ephemera. The bulk of the collection consists of publicity photographs, ca. 1900-1940, of vaudeville and variety acts, popular singers, jazz musicians, and brass band-type ensembles. African-American and female musicians represent a substantial portion of the figures covered by these files, especially from the late nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. A large number of cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite date from this period. Most of the photographs are gelatin silver prints. Other formats include ca. 500 engravings and lithographs of famous composers and classical musicians, 1727-1887 (bulk ca. 1880-1860). Of these, Irish musicians are prominent. About a dozen drawings in charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor are present, as well as an oil painting of Beethoven. The great majority of the concert programs in the collection are for classical musicians appearing in New York at Mendelssohn Hall, Aeolian Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Town Hall. Many of the programs for the latter date from late March 1941. Letters in the collection, 1780s-1977 (bulk 1820s-1860s) are chiefly written by classical composers. The manuscript and printed music includes works by several American musicians, including autograph lyrics and music for twenty-eight of Paul Anka's songs, probably from the early 1960s. Published music includes arrangements and piano and vocal scores for compositions by Victor Herbert and Pietro Mascagni. Composite portraits are located at the end of the alphabet, followed by Unidentified and Miscellaneous items. A very small number of items pertain to non-musical subjects (painters, actors, etc.).

Spanish Refugee Aid Records, Bulk, 1953-1983, 1941-2006, (Bulk 1953-1983)
Title:
Spanish Refugee Aid Records Bulk, 1953-1983 1941-2006, (Bulk 1953-1983)
Spanish Refugee Aid (SRA) was founded in 1953 to assist refugees of the Spanish Civil War who were then residing in France. Nancy Macdonald (1910-1996) was the leading figure in the founding of Spanish Refugee Aid and remained at the organization's helm until her retirement in 1983. SRA maintained an office in New York City and coordinated aid efforts in France from Paris, Toulouse and Montauban. Between 1953 and 2006 when SRA, by then a program of the International Rescue Committee, was dissolved, over 5,500 refugees received aid from SRA. The collection includes case files, photographs, and office records consisting of correspondence, administrative files, financial records and clippings. The case files of the Spanish refugees are a rich source of demographic data. Many of the case files also have corresponding photographs. The voluminous correspondence files for both the New York and Toulouse offices highlight the concern of those working in SRA for the needs of the individual refugees, and reveal the contacts and working relationships SRA developed with other aid organizations, political groups and individuals to assist the refugees. Records documenting aid distribution are also extensive. Although the needs of the Spanish refugees were always paramount, the correspondence in the SRA records also reflects the political allegiances of those involved with SRA (as staff, as contacts and as recipients of aid) and of Nancy Macdonald in particular. The SRA records, therefore, provide extensive information not only on Spanish refugees residing in France following the Spanish Civil War, but also on left-wing politics in the United States and Europe from the World War II era through the 1980s.

Kahn, Albert Eugene, 1912-1979. Papers, 1946-1979.
Title:
Papers, 1946-1979.
Papers of Albert E. Kahn, author of several bestselling books who rose to national prominence during the anti-Communist crusades of the McCarthy era. Blacklisted for his communist sympathies, Kahn, along with fellow radical Angus Cameron, started a publishing company for blacklisted authors. In addition, Kahn played a critical role in the downfall of McCarthy, publishing "The Matusow Affair" in which one of McCarthy's critical witnesses admitted that he consistently gave false testimony before McCarthy's congressional committee. Kahn also played a role in the international peace movement, helping to found the World Peace Council and advocating closer cultural and political ties with the Soviet Union. The collection is dominated by two types of material: Kahn's personal and professional correspondence, and research material for his books. Of note is his correspondence with radical artist Rockwell Kent, a close friend, and research material for "Joys and Sorrows," his book with Pablo Casals which includes photocopies of correspondence copied from Casals' home in the south of France.
