Gamaliel Bradford (1863-1932) was an American biographical essayist, poet, dramatist, and critic of Wellesley, Mass. He was the sixth of seven Gamaliel Bradfords in unbroken succession, of whom the first was a great-grandson of Governor William Bradford of the Plymouth Colony. He entered Harvard College with the Class of 1886, but withdrew after a few weeks due to fragile health, a problem that was to plague him his entire life. He married Helen Hubbard Ford. Bradford attempted virtually every type of creative writing known in his time though his published writings were mostly unsuccessful until the publication of Lee the American (1912). He is best known for his development of the "psychograph," a type of biography that focuses on analyzing personality rather than providing a chronological account of a subject's life. He produced 13 biographical-sketch volumes between 1917 and 1932, as well as numerous single-person biographies. In his later years, Bradford had a habit of typing one page per day of about 350 words in a personal journal. About one-seventh of these journal entries and much of his correspondence was published in the volumes: The journal of Gamaliel Bradford, 1883-1932, edited by Van Wyck Brooks. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1933; and The letters of Gamaliel Bradford, 1918-1931, edited by Van Wyck Brooks. Boston: Houghton Mifflin company, 1934.

Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes and transcripts, student notes and notebooks, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, miscellaneous papers, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1862-1938, is between Ford and historians, librarians, scholars, writers, publishers, booksellers, and lawyers, including extensive correspondence with Charles Francis Adams, Henry Cabot Lodge, James Ford Rhodes, and John Franklin Jameson. Family correspondence, 1870-1935, is chiefly incoming letters from many members of Ford's family. Most of the writings are drafts or hand-written manuscripts for works which Ford authored or edited and are concerned with American history and economics. Notes and transcripts are comprised of numerous transcripts of historical letters and other documents with research notes, annotated printed matter, and notebooks (some from Ford's student days.) Diaries, 1873-1918, contain brief entries concerning Ford's activities, and scrapbooks, ca. 1898-1931, consist mostly of clippings and other materials on a particular subject. Photographs are of Ford family members and of various personal and public subjects. Miscellaneous papers include personal papers, writings by individuals other than Ford, records of organizations with which he was affiliated, genealogical documents and biographical sketches of the Fowler and Chauncey families, financial accounts, and ephemera.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
