Violinist Jascha Heifetz was born on Feb. 2, 1901, in Vilnius, Lithuania. He studied violin with Leopold Auer at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He embarked on an international career in 1912, became an American citizen in 1925, and continued to concertize and record until 1972. He died in Los Angeles on Dec. 10, 1987.
Jascha Heifetz, legendary American violinist, was born in Vilnius on February 2, 1901. His first teacher was his own father, but he also studied with Elias Malkin before being accepted into the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1910. He studied first with Leopold Auer's assistant, Nalbandyan, and then with Auer himself. Heifetz had impressed audiences from the age of six when he performed Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. At the age of ten he performed in St. Petersburg, and his highly successful Berlin debut took place on May 23, 1912. Later that same year he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Arthur Nikisch. In 1917 Heifetz was offered the opportunity to perform a concert tour of the United States, and on October 27 that year he made his Carnegie Hall debut. In 1925 Heifetz became an American citizen. During the early 1920s Heifetz performed in England, Australia and East Asia, and later in the decade he performed in Palestine. In 1934 he made a return concert visit to Russia. After the Second World War Heifetz reduced the number of his concert appearances although he made notable appearances with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1967 and at Carnegie Hall, where he performed collaboratively three times in 1964 with several artists, including Piatigorsky. Other musicians with whom Heifetz collaborated in chamber concerts were Emanuel Feuermann, William Primrose and Artur Rubinstein. Beginning in 1962, Heifetz taught at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles and was the first faculty member to hold the Heifetz Chair in Music which was established in 1975. Throughout his life Heifetz made numerous recordings on major labels such as Columbia, Decca and Gramophone, but the largest number of recordings he made were for the Victor/RCA Victor label. He composed music himself and also wrote numerous transcriptions for the violin. Under the alias Jim Hoyle, he wrote the hit song "When You Make Love to Me (Don't Make Believe)" which was sung by Bing Crosby. Heifetz also commissioned and performed several new concertos, of which probably the most well-known is the Violin Concerto by William Walton. Other concertos commissioned by Heifetz include those by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Louis Gruenberg and Arnold Schoenberg (which Heifetz never played).

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Interlochen Center for the Arts records, ca.1880-[ongoing].
The collection consists of the records of Interlochen (1927-present) and the personal papers (ca. 1880-1966) of Joseph Maddy. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Chronological, Subject, Later Administrators, Boards, Recent Leaders, Printed, Visual Materials, Sound Recordings, and Scrapbooks. The Chronological series focuses on Maddy and the Camp until 1966, while the Subject series, though heavily relating to Maddy, also includes much on developments through 1989. The Later Administrators series begins in the late 1950s when Maddy expanded the staff in anticipation of making Interlochen a year-round institution and ends in 1989 when the last major leader from the Maddy era retired. Boards (governing bodies) starts with the Camp's founding in 1928 and ends in 1989. Recent Leaders documents developments from 1989 on. Printed offers coverage to the present but is more complete for the early years through the 1980s. While the Visual Materials and Sound Recordings series extend from the 1920s into the 1980s, they offer best coverage from 1924 to 1942. Scrapbooks, with gaps in the early years, documents both Maddy and the Camp, beginning with the National High School Orchestra and ending with the Camp's 50th anniversary celebration in 1978. The Subject series includes documentation of the dispute between Maddy and James C. Petrillo, head of the American Federation of Musicians, over the use of non-union amateur musicians in the radio broadcasts of Interlochen performances. Correspondents represented in the collection consist of individuals famed in musical performance. Included are Percy Grainger, Frederic Fennell, Ferdé Grofe, Pablo Casals, Howard Hanson, Jascha Heifitz, Paul Whiteman, Lorin Maazel, Eugene Ormandy, and Jan Sibelius. Other fields and individuals represented include music education: Peter Dykema and Will Earhart; educational broadcasting: W. W. Charters and Edgar B. Gordon; commercial broadcasting: Franklin Dunham and Judith Waller; business: S. S. Kresge and the Alden and Herbert Dow family; and politics: Wilber Brucker, Samuel Insull, and Arthur Vandenberg.

Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Records. Series III., Blanche W. Knopf, 1918-1966 (bulk 1940-1966).
Title:
Records. Series III., Blanche W. Knopf, 1918-1966 (bulk 1940-1966).
This series contains Blanche W. Knopf's correspondence files, which illuminate the perspective of a founding member and key administrator of the Knopf firm, and an important American woman in publishing. Although relatively small, the series highlights the most important authors of the Knopf collection, and also covers routine publishing business such as copyediting, payment of royalties and advances, syndication and reprint rights, productions costs, and sales figures. Important correspondents include Elizabeth Bowen, Albert Camus, Willa Cather, Kahlil Gibran, Langston Hughes, and Thomas Mann. Mrs. Knopf's correspondence with an individual writer discussed not only her or his own work, but that of other writers as well. For example, Carl Van Vechten, a close friend of the Knopfs, wrote to Blanche about the need for writing and publishing "on the Negro question," suggesting Langston Hughes, Walter White, and Richard Wright. Correspondence with Raymond Postgate is especially valuable for its detailed descriptions of publishing in the context of World War II. Mrs. Knopf also encouraged experts in their fields to write specific books and helped authors choose appropriate book titles. Documentation of some of Blanche Knopf's European and South American travels is located in files named "Trips," which are further broken down by destination. The files include lists of people Mrs. Knopf visited or intended to visit, correspondence about the writers, and occasional personal reflections on the trip. Her travels on behalf of the firm not only brought in a rich variety of writers, but often cemented personal relationships with authors, literary agents, artists, ambassadors, and other influential people. Handwritten and typed letters between Alfred and Blanche Knopf that reveal their working relationship can be found throughout the series. In this correspondence, they convey their opinions of various manuscripts, make plans for future business travel, and divide the responsibility of contacting authors to solicit their work. There are occasional personal remarks, such as Blanche Knopf's 1962 letter suggesting that she did not feel "whole," and feared she would not live much longer. A rare autobiographical account reveals Blanche Knopf's perspective on the founding years of the firm, and in particular, her intense frustration regarding Samuel Knopf's participation in the firm's business. Additionally, correspondence regarding important events such as the Knopfs' fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration, Mrs. Knopf's induction into the French Legion of Honor, and the honorary Doctorate of Letters she received from Franklin and Marshall College is located in this series.

New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

American Guild of Musical Artists Records Bulk, 1935-1965 1918-1993, (Bulk 1935-1965)
The American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) was founded in 1936 in New York City to protect the interests of solo musical artists in the field of opera and later expanded to include dancers, choreographers and some categories of stage managers. The union became affiliated with the Associated Actors and Artistes of America (known as the 4A's) and established regional offices throughout the United States in addition to the main New York office. The records of two predecessor organizations, the Grand Opera Artists Association and the Grand Opera Choral Alliance comprise the earliest material in the collection. The bulk of the collection consists of the papers of AGMA's New York office, including correspondence, bargaining files and agreements, arbitration files, internal structure, member correspondence, an early membership ledger, clippings, convention Proceedings, scrapbooks, and records of guest status fees paid by artists from abroad. There are also a number of files documenting AGMA's relations with other theatrical unions, and many failed attempts at mergers between members of the 4A's.

Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Records. : Series I., General Correspondence, 1922-1977 (bulk 1946-1966).
Title:
Records. : Series I., General Correspondence, 1922-1977 (bulk 1946-1966).
This series consists of the central editorial files of the Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Company. It contains the correspondence for the day-to-day operations of the firm, including letters from foreign publishers seeking publication and translation rights, contacts with young writers, inquiries from aspiring authors, correspondence on legal matters such as copyright, letters from literary agents, and requests for information about writers. The General Correspondence series also contains correspondence between editors and Knopf authors, many files of which follow the creation of a book from the original idea to its final publication. Taken as a whole, this series offers a comprehensive overview of the activities of the editorial offices. The main strength of the series derives from the individual files devoted to writers published by Knopf. These files typically reveal the writer's first connection with the company, which might have occurred when the firm contacted the writer expressing their interest in her or his work, or when the author submitted a manuscript. Files follow the correspondence between the editor and writer, revealing the relationship between the two as the manuscript progresses, continues once the book is published, and shows how the book is received and how well it sells. Especially interesting is the way the files reveal how an editor would guide the creative process, as she or he suggests changes, additions, or deletions. While the vast majority of files contain correspondence only, some files relate to the inner workings of the firm. These are labelled by department or, more often, by employee name; the most significant are for Blanche and Alfred A. Knopf, and can be found in most years. The files rely on the use of documentation in the form of internal memoranda that were sent from editors and employees of other departments to update the Knopfs on current activities. Folders titled with the name of a trip taken by Alfred or Blanche Knopf in a specific year often include narrative descriptions of the visit, including detailed lists of publishers, scouts, literary agents, and writers with whom they met. Further, information about writers is also available in these folders. For example, internal memos about the rejection of John Knowles' A Separate Peace are in one of Blanche Knopf's European trip folders. Other employee named files, like those of Secretary and later President William A. Koshland, give an overview of the firm's administrative history.

Series I: Convention proceedings, 1944-1962. This series is available, along with AGMA Governing Board minutes, 1936-1980, and Choral Committee minutes, 1944-1948, on microfilm (Reels 7427/1-49). Researchers must use microfilm; consult archives staff.) Series II: General files, 1918-1993, comprises the bulk of the collection. The vast majority of General Files contain material from the New York AGMA office, including bargaining files, arbitrations, member correspondence, and communications with regional offices, with managers, with venues and companies, and with other unions. They also contain background or research material on related organizations, events, and notable individuals. There is a small amount of Board of Governors meeting minutes, 1938-1944 (partially duplicating minutes available on microfilm; see note under Series I), as well as agendas for board meetings, 1947-1955. General correspondence is filed by year and includes incoming and outgoing letters; these files document the administrations of AGMA presidents Lawrence Tibbett, John Brownlee, George London, Cornell MacNeil and Gene Boucher, with a few files dating from a later period. The records of two predecessor organizations, the Grand Opera Choral Alliance and the Grand Opera Artists Association of America, are located alphabetically within the General Files and represent some of the earliest material in the collection. Series III: Guest status fees, c.1965-1991 (mostly 1970s), contains standard paperwork required of foreign dance companies wishing to perform in AGMA's jurisdiction. Series IV: Oversize scrapbooks and ledger, 1936-1951, consists of a scrapbook of publicity clippings, 1936 and 1950-1951; a ledger of cash receipts (dues), 1938-1940; and a scrapbook containing dues cards, c.1936-1940, filed alphabetically.
