Percy Grainger was an Australian-born pianist and composer. Precocious and highly talented, he studied in Germany and England before becoming a citizen of the United States. An eccentric character with eclectic interests and some extreme beliefs, he composed or arranged more than 1200 pieces of music, many innovative and influential. Grainger had an interest in folk music of many cultures, and pioneered collection methods for folk music in Europe.
