From the comédie lyrique in three acts and seven scenes; choreography by Joseph Hansen; first performed in Paris at the Opéra, 16 March 1894. Originally composed for the Opéra-Comique, as Massenet was finishing it in the spring of 1893, the original Thaïs signed a contract with the Opéra, and Massenet composed this ballet during the summer.
