Joanne Kyger Correspondence, 1957-1975
Title:
Joanne Kyger Correspondence, 1957-1975
The correspondence of an important member of the 'post-beat' West Coast poetry community. The bulk of the collection covers the period from 1957 to 1972. Included are letters, cards, drawings, and poems from Joe Brainard, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Spicer, Lewis Warsh, and Philip Whalen. Also included are eight folders of correspondence between Kyger and Gary Snyder, to whom Kyger was married from 1960 to 1964. The Kyger/Snyder letters range from August 1958 to February 1975, with the bulk of the materials falling between August 1958 and December 1959, the period during which Kyger and Snyder were preparing for their 1960 marriage in Kyoto, Japan. Kyger divorced Snyder in 1964 and married the painter Jack Boyce in 1966. The collection includes much ephemera from the travels of Boyce and Kyger through Europe.

Berrigan, Ted. Ted Berrigan and Alice Notley collection, 1954-1980.
Title:
Ted Berrigan and Alice Notley collection, 1954-1980.
The collection contains material related to Ted Berrigan from 1954-1980. This artificially created collection includes collages, correspondence, photographs, printed material and writings. The majority of the collection is related to Ted Berrigan; Alice Notley materials have been grouped together under her name. Collages include photographs that have been altered and pieced together by Ted Berrigan, Anne Waldman, and others. Correspondents include Ron Padgett, Alice Notley, Harris Schiff, and others. Notable content in the Berrigan correspondence includes unpublished poetry in the body of the text. Notebooks contain drawings, photographs and poems, as well as lists, newspaper clippings and general notes. Berrigan's 1982-1983 notebook was his final notebook and contains his last poem. Photographs include images of Ted Berrigan, Alice Notley, Joe Brainerd, Ron Padgett, Anne Waldman, and others. Of note is an image of Berrigan in Korea in 1954 while serving in the military, in addition to various images documenting literary events during the last years of his life. Printed material includes a volume of C: A JOURNAL OF POETRY edited by Berrigan, and other literary journals, as well as posters and flyers for St. Mark's poetry readings. Much of the collection consists of material relating to the publication of TRAIN RIDE, which was published in 1978. The book was dedicated to Joe Brainard, who also designed the cover. In addition to manuscript and typescript copies of various drafts of the work, the collection also contains correspondence, notes, and financial records related to the printing of the work, which was published by Annabel Levitt, the owner of Vehicle Editions. Also included is a transcript of an interview of Ted Berrigan by Clark Coolidge, a transcript of an oral history entitled, "The Reminiscences of Ted Berrigan," and Berrigan's manuscript response to poet Scott Cohen's "Jimi Hendrix Questionnaire." Alice Notley materials include handmade books of poems and birthday cards dedicated to Ted Berrigan.

Title:
Gitin, David. Papers, 1968-1993.
David Gitin edited Bricoleur, corresponded with Oppen from 1968-1977. He published Oppen, sought his editorial eye when writing poetiy himself, welcomed his support when he wentjob-hunting. Oppen had sustained correspondence in this periodwith Michael Heller, Armand Schwerner, Levertov & Michael Cuddihy, but probably not many others. Serendipity sold for Gitin letters a decade ago, but that lot did not include Oppen, as I remember it. Below is a detailed list ofthe Oppen file, and as a courtesy, a register of everything else Gitin brought in last week, for though it is tempting to sell these others singly in various directions, to maximize profits, it is not courteous to Stanford to do so: I include all the non-Oppen for a lump sum additional, as indicated. Gitin did not cooperate with Rachel Blau who did a SELECTED LETTERS for Sulphur, publishing mostly letters to her. Our letters are unpublished. Sometimes Oppen addresses Joyce Gitin. Oppen & Gitin were often in the same city together (SF), & therefore met, did not correspond. In this period Oppen's SEASCAPE is published & COLLECTED POEMS is in progress. Rough drafts ofPRIMTTIVE appear in the correspondence, a bit.

James Schuyler Papers, 1947-1991
Title:
James Schuyler Papers, 1947-1991
Papers of James Schuyler, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and member of the New York School circle of poets and painters. A New York City resident since 1950, Schuyler moved among prominent artists and writers of the period and worked as an art critic and associate editor for Art News from 1955 to circa 1962, and in the Museum of Modern Art beginning in 1957. He published his first novel, Alfred and Guinevere, in 1958 and continued a distinguished career, publishing twelve books of poetry and two additional novels, including A Nest of Ninnies with John Ashbery. Schuyler's collection of poems entitled The Morning of the Poem won a Pulitzer Prize in 1981. The bulk of the materials date between 1950 and 1970, with a second field of concentration in the late 1980s, and include correspondence with contemporary writers and visual artists, including John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Joe Brainard, Kenward Elmslie, Barbara Guest, Fairfield Porter, Ron Padgett, and Anne Waldman. Also included are manuscripts and typescripts; Art News materials; notebooks; diaries; miscellaneous subject files; and audio tape recordings. In 1992, a substantive addition was appended to the original Schuyler collection. The original collection is organized into eight series: 1) ORIGINAL FINDING AID, 2) BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS, 3) CORRESPONDENCE, 4) WRITINGS, 5) WRITINGS OF OTHERS, 6) SUBJECTS, 7) AUDIO TAPE RECORDINGS and 8) ORIGINALS OF PRESERVATION PHOTOCOPIES; the addition to the James Schuyler papers is organized into five series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE, 2) WRITINGS, 3) PHOTOGRAPHS, 4) WRITINGS OF OTHERS, and 5) MISCELLANEOUS MATERIAL.

Joel Oppenheimer Papers, 1925-1988.
Title:
Joel Oppenheimer Papers 1925-1988.
Born in Yonkers in 1930, Joel Oppenheimer was a student of Charles Olson's at Black Mountain College from 1950-1953. He published over a dozen books of poetry, a play, a book on baseball, and was a columnist for the from 1968 to 1984. Oppenheimer was the first director of the St. Mark's Poetry Project in Greenwich Village (from 1966 to 1968) and was an active teacher of poetry throughout his life. He died of complications from cancer in 1988. The collection contains only a small amount of Oppenheimer's writing and correspondence prior to his time at Black Mountain College. The Black Mountain period itself is also represented somewhat poorly, although there are a few items of ephemera. The content of the collection becomes more comprehensive in the late 1950s and into the 1960s, with a substantial number of poetry manuscripts and a wider range of correspondence. While most of Oppenheimer's published poems are represented in the collection, it is often difficult to discern between first drafts and later copies. Village Voice

Title:
Allen Ginsberg letter to István Eörsi, 1990 March 28.
Ginsberg suggests "appeals from Eastern Europeans to stem the tide of right wing censorship here!" He encloses news and a PEN Club statement (not present) and suggests György Konrád send a letter for printing in the N.Y. Times. He gave similar material to a conference of Czechoslovakan literary figures at New York University under the auspices of George Soros and the International Research & Exchanges Board that included Jaroslav Koran the translator of Gary Snyder, Josef Jařab who is editing a translation of Ginsberg, Jiří Pelán of Odeon publishing and Egon Bondy. Ginsberg is going to Prague where he'll meet Nanao Sakaki and Jiří Wein, relates travel and reading plans, and the possible appearance of Ed Sanders who has financial problems and Anne Waldman. Ginsberg asks whether Hungarians voted for the "Chocolate" Market and notes that the Democratic Forum in Germany did poorly in the election and wonders "How'll it go" in Prague, Budapest, Moscow, Bucharest, Sofia, Washington?"

Title:
James Tate Papers, 1944-1998 (bulk 1962-1998).
Correspondence, typed and handwritten manuscript drafts, galley proofs, page proofs, photographs, drawings, posters, and published works in serials document James Tate's literary work and personal life, from the early 1960s to the late 1990s. The earliest item is a circa 1944 letter to Tate's father from an unidentified author. Correspondence is the largest series and predominantly contains incoming letters to Tate from friends, other poets, and publishers. Also included is financial information as well as correspondence related to Tate's literary activities and his employment at The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Significant correspondents include Russell Banks, Marvin Bell, Michael Benedikt, Gerard Malanga, Charles Simic, Anne Waldman, and Charles Wright. The subject files in Series III. further document Tate's literary career and his personal life. The Works series includes numerous single paged typed drafts of individual poems, as well as manuscript and other prepublication forms of Tate's books. Published copies of single poems or prose works are located in the Published Materials series. Drafts, photocopies, and offprints of works sent to Tate by poets and writers such as John Ashbery, Carolyn Forché, and Leslie Wolf are located in the Works by Others series. Many contain Tate's handwritten comments. The materials are generally in good condition, although some of the paper is yellowed and brittle. Two award plaques have been transferred to the Ransom Center's Personal Effects Collection.
