The Naropa Institute was founded in 1974 by Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, as a summer school. It offered courses, workshops and performances in dance, theater, music, painting, religious studies, psychology and cognitive science. By 1976, two year-round Master of Arts programs and three one-year certificate programs had begun. In 1978, the Institute received candidacy for accreditation status from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

By 1982, the Naropa Institute was an upper-divisional college, offering the last two years of undergraduate work leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in dance, poetics, psychology and Buddhist studies. It also offered Master of Arts degrees in eastern and western psychology and in Buddhist studies.

The Naropa-sponsored Jack Kerouac Conference was held in 1982 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication of Kerouac's book, On the Road.
