May Sarton (May 3, 1912-July 16, 1995), poet and novelist, was born Elanore Marie Sarton in Wondelgem, Belgium, the daughter of George Sarton, a noted historian of science, and Eleanor Mabel Elwes, an English portrait painter and designer. Sarton moved with her parents to England, and in 1916 the family immigrated to the United States. All three became naturalized Americans in 1924, by which time Sarton's name had been Americanized to Eleanor May.
Sarton attended Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, an open-air school that encouraged creative and intellectual development. Her experiences there, particularly her relationship with several remarkable female teachers, greatly influenced both her life and her writing. After graduating, Sarton left home to become an actress in Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theater rather than attending college. When that theater disbanded in 1933, the young actress formed her own Apprentice Theater, forgoing any serious devotion to a strictly literary career until her company failed in 1935.
Although she avoided college (her parents had intended for her to go to Vassar), Sarton read voraciously and had begun writing poetry early in life. Her first published poems (five sonnets) appeared in Poetry magazine in 1929; likewise, a volume of her poems, Encounter in April, was published in 1937. Poetry continued as her preferred genre throughout her life, but she could write it only when inspired by what she referred to as her "Muse." Sarton filled the intervals by teaching (including a three-year stint between 1949 and 1952 as a freshman composition instructor at Harvard and another from 1960 to 1964 as a creative writing teacher at Wellesley), writing novels, and keeping journals. In all of her work Sarton treated the recurring themes of solitude, the conflict between marriage and women's freedom, relationships among women, and aging.
Sarton's first novel, The Single Hound (1938), was about an aspiring poet and represents the first of many novels about the artistic life. The Bridge of Years was published in 1946, followed by four or more novels per decade through the 1970s. Anger appeared in 1982. Faithful Are the Wounds (1955) probably received the greatest single recognition, perhaps because its protagonist was a man and the subject matter McCarthyism; certainly it differed from her usual themes.
Although widely read, Sarton's novels received little attention from scholars and literary critics, primarily because she wrote to explore her own feelings and was not always careful with style. Although ignored by the literary establishment, Sarton's reputation grew among feminists as they read and discussed her work.
Hailed by feminists but poorly rewarded by critics, Sarton jeopardized her chances for general recognition with the publication of Mrs. Stevens Hears the Mermaids Singing in 1965. In this novel about the difficulties of the female writer, she shocked the literary world and many of her dedicated readers by presenting a protagonist who was openly bisexual. Her agent advised against publication, and her publisher, Norton, would not advertise the book; this so angered Sarton that she bought a full-page ad for herself in the New York Times. Sarton apparently lost two jobs in 1965 after revealing that she was a lesbian. Indeed, she went on to speak openly of her sexual preferences in her journals. These revelations damaged her universal reputation but made her a heroine to many feminists.
In spite of critical neglect, Sarton continued to produce approximately one book per year, claiming it was a financial necessity to do so. Nevertheless, she received huge amounts of mail from fans, particularly in response to the journals and memoirs. Although she resented this burden of correspondence, Sarton was touched by the reader response to her work and, until her 1987 heart attack, answered each letter herself. In her journals, her greatest distress seemed to focus on the time that cancer and depression stole from her work.
Although she had no inclination to marry and usually lived alone, Sarton had many friendships. Her writing schedule usually tied her up for three hours each morning only. This gave her time to entertain, and she also maintained friendships through frequent correspondence. She wrote to and occasionally saw Virginia Woolf. In "My Sisters, O My Sisters," Sarton aligns herself with other female authors, calling them, "We who are writing women and strange monsters." She felt women were treated badly by male critics, but despite her own feeling that she was being ignored, the author received many fellowships and honorary doctorates.
Sarton died in York, Maine. An interviewer for Publishers Weekly called Sarton's literary recognition "one of the most interesting and long-overdue." In a career spanning sixty years and encompassing more than forty volumes of poetry and prose, Sarton grew gradually from an unknown to a respected and unique artist of her craft.

Title:
Elizabeth Evans Papers, 1941-2007
Elizabeth Evans was born in 1935 and grew up in Statesville, N.C. She received her doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970 and subsequently taught literature at Georgia Institute of Technology. She authored books on various writers, including (1981), (1989), (1993), and (1997). The papers of Elizabeth Evans are letters and other materials relating to prominent women writers, including Doris Betts, Josephine Jacobsen, Maxine Kumin, Sally Fitzgerald, May Sarton, Anne Tyler, and Cecil Dawkins. There are also letters from Anne Tyler's mother, Phyllis Mahon Tyler. Letters from Doris Betts cover a wide variety of subjects. They include critical comment and advice on Evans's literary efforts, as well as discussion about day-to-day obligations of professional writers and news of mutual friends. Also included are drafts of articles about Betts, draft material from Evans's book about Betts, and correspondence with others about Betts; interviews Evans conducted with Betts; and correspondence of Betts with others, including Penelope Presley, a high school student to whom Betts wrote about creative writing. Letters from Josephine Jacobsen and her husband, Eric Jacobsen, relate mostly to personal matters. Letters from Anne Tyler discuss both personal matters and topics relating to Evans's book about Tyler's work. Letters from Phyllis Mahon Tyler also primarily relate to Evans's Tyler book. Letters from Maxine Kumin, Sally Fitzgerald, and Cecil Dawkins deal mostly with aspects of each author's career and professional development, but there is also information about their everyday activities. May Sarton letters relate primarily to Evans's book on Sarton's work. Also included are manuscripts, clippings, and photographs relating to Evans's correspondents. Mervin Lane Manuscripts
Title:
Mervin Lane Manuscripts
This collection of manuscripts was created during preparation of Lane's Black Mountain College: Sprouted Seeds, and includes typescript drafts and final galley proofs of the text of the book, miscellaneous working papers, correspondence with contributors to the anthology, correspondence with former students who were willing to comment privately on their experience at the college but who decline preparing comments for publication in the anthology, and press clippings. Correspondence with Lane includes a substantial amount of information regarding life at Black Mountain College with many of the contriubtors commenting on the influence that the college has had upon their lives, the emotionally challenging and demanding aspects of their student life, and the sexually unrestricted aspects of the communal atmosphere. Numerous comments are made about the teaching style and classes of art instructor Josef Albers, expecially in the files of Peggy Bailey, F.A. Foster, and John Urbain; dancer Merce Cunningham and his involvement with the college is discussed by June Christensen and Elizabeth Jennerjahn; sexual freedom and communal life are discussed by Doughton Cramer, Anne Mangold, Bill McGee, and Ike Nakata; the musical concerts are discussed by Judith Davidoff; and Charles Olson as a major influence upon students is related by Mary Fiore, Mildred Harding, and Helen Hellman. John Rice, founder of the college, is discussed by F.A. Foster, Ika Nakata, William C. Rice, Frank Rice, and Marian Teeter; the accidental drowning of student Frank Nacke is recalled by Ike Nakata, Morton Steinau, and Kacke's sister, Marian Teeter; the artistic life of the college is described by Elizabeth Jennerjahn, Howard Rondthaler, and Patsy Wood; John Reiss examines the austere lifestyle of the students and visits of personalities such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Agnes de Mille; Anne Mangold's refutation of former works on the college are told from the perspective of a faculty wife during the turbulent years of college founder John Rice; and former faculty member Theodore Dreier comments upon his life after Black Mountain College, and details the accidental deaths of both of his sons: artist Leo Krikorian's file includes an article on his ownership of the famous San Francisco bar, The Place, which helped to found the beatnik generation in the 1950s; Judd Woldin writes about the death of music instructor Heinrich Jalowetz; the material from May Sarton is reprinted from one of her published works, and her note comments upon the lasting influence of the college upon her writing; and Albert Einstein's possible affiliation with the college is discussed by John Reiss and Phyllis Thomas. Photographs of several contributors are included.

Sarton, May, 1912-1995. [Letters, ca. 1940-1980] / May Sarton.
Title:
[Letters, ca. 1940-1980] / May Sarton.
Letter, n.d., Lewisburg, W. Va. [to] Lamonts [sic]. Sarton's letter is most likely from the fall of 1940 when she was on a speaking tour of the South. Sarton writes to thank Helen D. La Monte for her hospitality. Enclosed with the letter are typescripts (signed) of: The trees, On Hampshire Downs, From Cornwall. These three poems were included in Sarton's book: Encounter in April (1937). The letter and poems are on letterhead: May Sarton, 5 Channing Place, Cambridge, Mass. -- Letter, 1980 Aug. 15, Box 99, York, Maine [to] Mrs. Gottfried (Sallie Simons Gottfried). Sarton replies to a letter of Gottfried's. Sarton notes her radiation treatments and then responds to items in Gottfried's letter, especially noting the issue of friendship among women and that it is not always sexual. Sarton notes that she is not a militant feminist. She recalls knowing Virginia Woolf and recommends her forthcoming book, Recovering, suggesting that the book will "no doubt irritate you." -- Letter, 1980 Aug. 22, W. Falmouth, Ma. [to] Ms. Sarton. In this letter (typescript, carbon) Gottfried responds to Sarton's letter suggesting that Sarton had mis-read her earlier one. Gottfried refers to her own interest in Virginia Woolf, mentions Marion Dodd of Hampshire Bookshop, as well as Smith College professors Esther Dunn, Grace Hazard Conkling, and Mina Curtiss. She speaks of her own mother's intense friendship with another woman. And she comments favorably on Sarton's book Recovering.

Sexton, Anne, 1928-1974. Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996, (bulk 1953-1974).
Title:
Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996, (bulk 1953-1974).
Manuscripts, correspondence, financial records, contracts with her publishers, notes from her presentations, and samples of her students' poetry comprise the bulk of the Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996 (bulk 1953-1974). The collection is organized into four series, with materials arranged alphabetically by title or author. The papers thoroughly explore Sexton's writing career from her earliest poems to the materials published after her death. Working copies of all the major collections of verse are included, as are multiple versions of her best known play, Mercy Street. Individual poems demonstrate Sexton's editing methods, as do various published and unpublished short stories. Diaries, interviews, articles, and materials from her many presentations fill out the Works series. Correspondence includes a variety of Sexton's personal and business correspondence. There is a large quantity of correspondence with colleges and institutions requesting readings or Sexton's attendence at various functions, as well as communication between Sexton and magazines, her publishers, fellow poets, students, friends, and family. Of particular note are letters between Sexton and Lois Amos, Michael Bearpark, Saul Bellow, Michael Benedikt, Elizabeth Bishop, Louise Conant, Morton Courier, Dorianne Goetz, Anthony Hecht, Houghton, Mifflin and Company, The Hudson Review, Barbara Kevles, Maxine Kumin, Philip Legler, Robert Lowell, George MacBeth, Jack McCarthy, John Mood, Marianne Moore, The New Yorker, Dennis O'Brien, Tillie Olsen, Oxford University Press, Sylvia Plath, Al Poulin, Alfred Sexton, Dick Sherwood, Robin Skelton, Alice Smith, William Snodgrass, George Starbuck, Brian Sweeney, John Updike, Anne Wilder, and James Wright. The remainder of the material is composed of drafts of other authors' works, fan mail sent to Sexton, school memorabilia, photographs of Sexton and others, a notebook of newspaper clippings about Sexton kept by Alice Smith, a letter from William Wallace Denslow to Arthur Staples in 1912, and a set of page proofs for a German translation of Anne Sexton: A Self-Portrait in Letters, published in 1996. At the time of their acquisition by the Ransom Center, some of the Sexton materials were closed for use. The restrictions were lifted in 2011 and the materials then housed and described as Series IV, Formerly closed materials, were made available. Included in these materials are typescript drafts of early works, correspondence, four journals containing detailed information on Sexton's therapy sessions, and audio tapes of therapy sessions.

George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008, (bulk 1960-2000)
Title:
George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008 (bulk 1960-2000)
George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Records. Series VII., Other Department Files, 1916-1996 (bulk 1943-1969).
Title:
Records. Series VII., Other Department Files, 1916-1996 (bulk 1943-1969).
This series contains selected files created outside of the Editorial Department, which dominates the rest of the collection. The series contains only two boxes of materials from the Sales and College Departments, with the great majority of the files originating from the Publicity Department. The Publicity Department files chronicle the activities and concerns of editors, authors, administrators, and publicity department personnel in the struggle to market their titles and bring authors and the company to international attention and acclaim. A vast selection of materials, including artwork, biographical information, book jackets, correspondence, clippings, memos, photographs, publication and planning forms, and reviews, among others, combine to give the user a comprehensive view of the promotional process. Correspondence in the Publicity and Permanent Title files is often routine, containing materials such as mass mailings of introductions, booksellers' comments, and requests for review copies from individuals, organizations, newspapers and journals. However, some files offer exchanges between authors, editors, and book designers, primarily concerning promotional strategies, itineraries, and editing or revisions of manuscripts. The Publicity Department subseries is also rich with photographs (some with accompanying negatives), including portraits, publicity stills, and candid snapshots. Renowned photographers such as Henri Cartier Bresson, E. O. Hoppe, Edward Steichen, and Carl Van Vechten contribute to the photo documentation of the collection, capturing such Knopf dignitaries as Willa Cather, John Hersey, Thomas Mann, H. L. Mencken, and many others. Additionally, this subseries holds thousands of snapshots and portraits of authors, colleagues, and family members taken by Alfred A. Knopf, an avid amateur photographer. Author questionnaires are found scattered throughout the Publicity subseries, but also in an alphabetically arranged collection of files of the biographical forms dating 1929-1965 (bulk 1948-1955). Valuable for their autobiographical content, the questionnaires also offer descriptions of an author's work. While some forms give scant information, others have been filled out in great detail, providing manuscript descriptions, author ideas for publicity, target audiences, previous awards, honors and publications, occupations, and family information. Other files in the Publicity Department subseries were created by publicity managers W. T. Loverd (ca. 1968-1970) and Jane Becker Friedman. Because Friedman advanced to Publicity Director, and also Vice President and Associate Publisher, her files reflect a lengthier time span (ca. 1966-1988), and a more narrow focus, especially in the later years, on the promotion of cookbooks. The Sales Department subseries contains the files of senior salesman Leon Anderson, focusing on his activities as a member of the Knopf sales department (1946-1960). The internal correspondence in this subseries is rich with encouragement, sales strategy, and advice from Knopf administrators such as Treasurer Joseph Lesser, Alfred and Blanche Knopf, and Sales Manager Alfred A. (Pat) Knopf, Jr. Also chronicled is Pat Knopf's resignation from the firm. The correspondence continues through Anderson's resignation in January 1960 and includes personal letters from Alfred Knopf as late as 1970. The College Department files contain correspondence and memos primarily concerning employee qualifications, expectations and duties, and suggestions for manuscripts. The file for the head of the College Department, John T. Hawes, includes ledger sheets containing comparisons of expected and actual sales, new title lists, and sales projections.

Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Records. : Series I., General Correspondence, 1922-1977 (bulk 1946-1966).
Title:
Records. : Series I., General Correspondence, 1922-1977 (bulk 1946-1966).
This series consists of the central editorial files of the Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Company. It contains the correspondence for the day-to-day operations of the firm, including letters from foreign publishers seeking publication and translation rights, contacts with young writers, inquiries from aspiring authors, correspondence on legal matters such as copyright, letters from literary agents, and requests for information about writers. The General Correspondence series also contains correspondence between editors and Knopf authors, many files of which follow the creation of a book from the original idea to its final publication. Taken as a whole, this series offers a comprehensive overview of the activities of the editorial offices. The main strength of the series derives from the individual files devoted to writers published by Knopf. These files typically reveal the writer's first connection with the company, which might have occurred when the firm contacted the writer expressing their interest in her or his work, or when the author submitted a manuscript. Files follow the correspondence between the editor and writer, revealing the relationship between the two as the manuscript progresses, continues once the book is published, and shows how the book is received and how well it sells. Especially interesting is the way the files reveal how an editor would guide the creative process, as she or he suggests changes, additions, or deletions. While the vast majority of files contain correspondence only, some files relate to the inner workings of the firm. These are labelled by department or, more often, by employee name; the most significant are for Blanche and Alfred A. Knopf, and can be found in most years. The files rely on the use of documentation in the form of internal memoranda that were sent from editors and employees of other departments to update the Knopfs on current activities. Folders titled with the name of a trip taken by Alfred or Blanche Knopf in a specific year often include narrative descriptions of the visit, including detailed lists of publishers, scouts, literary agents, and writers with whom they met. Further, information about writers is also available in these folders. For example, internal memos about the rejection of John Knowles' A Separate Peace are in one of Blanche Knopf's European trip folders. Other employee named files, like those of Secretary and later President William A. Koshland, give an overview of the firm's administrative history.
