Title:
Thomas Railey Markham papers, 1794-1932 (bulk 1850-1890).
The Civil War material, consisting of correspondence, military orders, certificates of authorization and other miscellaneous papers, is primarily concerned with Markham's activities as a chaplain attached to General W.S. Featherston's Brigade. The letters, written by the Markham and related families, describe military operations and camp and hospital conditions in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Virginia. Also included are lists compiled by Markham giving the names of soldiers in Mississippi regiments and their respective church denominations. The bulk of the collection documents Markham's activities as a Presbyterian minister and includes sermons, lecture notes taken at Princeton Theological Seminary and memorandum books containing names of parishioners of Fulton Street Presbyterian Church, New Orleans, and accounts of Markhams' social and church activities. Manuscript and printed material from the 1870s-1880s includes information relative to the origin and development of the Presbyterian parochial schools in New Orleans. The collection also contains papers of the Hodgson family. These include a list of books in the Thomas R. Markham Memorial Library, Lafayette Presbyterian Church, letters and pamphlets of the Louisiana Sunshine Society and letters to Daisy M.L. Hodgson, Recording Secretary General of the Confederated Southern Memorial Association. The bound manuscript volumes include scrapbooks, apparently compiled by members of the Hodgson and McWhan families, that contain newspaper clippings of obituaries of Rev. Markham, his family and members of his congregation and other articles on Confederate veteran and memorial organizations.

Title:
Topical pamphlet collection, <1741>-<1996>.
A long-established, artificial, still-growing collection consisting largely of printed pamphlets, with articles, reprints, some ephemera, typescripts, photocopied manuscript material, and one set of slides (to accompany a typescript item) also included. Some of the items within were bound during the 19th century, some are loose. The collection--not to be confused with the Concord Pamphlet Collection--includes <883> items, dating from <1741> to <1996>. Series I (Historical Topics) includes <352> items dating between <1741> and <1996>, Series II (Individuals, As Author or Subject) <300> items between <1761> and <1963>, Series III (Massachusetts Towns--History, Anniversaries, Description, etc.) <127> items between <1748> and <1991>, and Series IV (Pamphlet Materials on Multiple Topics, Organized by Form) <104> items between <1752> and <1940>. Some of the bound volumes include the occasional out-of-scope pamphlet. Moreover, there is some topical overlap of material in different subseries.
