George P. Mayo letters and diary, 1897-1903.

The collection consists of sixteen letters to his mother, Mary Armistead Tyler Mayo, and a diary kept at the beginning of his ministry in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The letters concern his experiences as a student at Princeton University, the Princeton Theological Seminary, and the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia, and his ministry in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The 1903 diary details his ministry in the Blue Ridge Mountains, his fundraising trips on behalf of the Blue Ridge missions, the conditions of life of the mountain people, and his own ordination to the priesthood. Among the people mentioned in his letters and diary are Frederick Neve, Grover Cleveland, Robert K. Massie, and Berryman Green.
