Samuel Howard Miller (1900-1968) was a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1917 to 1918 and graduated from Colgate University with a BTh in 1923 and a DD in 1953. He received a LittD from Clark University in 1959, a DD from Chicago Theological School in 1960, a DD from Kalamazoo College in 1962, an MA from Harvard University in 1959, a DEd from the University of Chattanooga in 1961, a DD from Denison University in 1962, and an LLD from Franklin University in 1964. He married Myra Studley in 1918 and the couple had three children: Myra Theresa (Bryan), Samuel Howard, Albert Samuel, and F. William. He was ordained to the Baptist ministry in 1923. He served churches in Belmar, New Jersey, from 1923 to 1928; Arlington, New Jersey, from 1928 to 1930; Clifton, New Jersey, from 1930 to 1935; and the Old Cambridge Baptist Church ( Cambridge, Massachusetts) from 1935 to 1959. He served as Adjunct Professor of Philosophy of Religion at the Andover Newton Theological School from 1951 to 1958. He was a lecturer at Harvard Divinity School from 1954 to 1958, Professor of Pastoral Theology from 1958 to 1959, and the Dean of Harvard Divinity School from 1959 to 1968. He served as the secretary to the Commission on Worship and the Arts for the National Council of Churches, and was a fellow of the Academy of Arts and Sciences. During his career he wrote The Life of the Soul (1951), The Life of the Church (1953), The Great Realities (1955), Prayers for Daily Use (1957), The Dilemma of Modern Belief (1963), and Man the Believer in an Age of Unbelief (1968); his final work, Religion in a Technical Age, was published on March 20, 1968, the day of his death.
