Watkins, Carleton E., 1829-1916. Mammoth plate landscape photographs from the George Davidson collection [graphic].
Title:
Mammoth plate landscape photographs from the George Davidson collection [graphic]. ca. 1861-1881.
Large format photographs of Western landscapes by C.E. Watkins and W.H. Jackson, collected by George Davidson. The 76 photographs by Watkins can be described as three different groups: Lassen and Shasta views (presumably all from the King Survey, 1870?), Mt. Lola area views taken as part of the 1879 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey under George Davidson and, thirdly, Yosemite views. The 1870 survey views show Mt. Lassen, hot springs near Lassen, Mt. Shasta (including the Whitney Glacier). These views are smaller than mammoth sized, approximately 21 x 31 cm. The Mt. Lola area views of 1879 are mammoth sized. (Note that Watkins' Round Top series owned by George Davidson are not present in the Bancroft Library collection. They remained at the California Academy of Sciences until their 2009 sale at Bonhams and Butterfields. Other copies of the Round Top views are in the collections of the Hearst Museum of Anthropology, Univerisity of California at Berkeley.) The Yosemite views are all mammoth sized, chiefly dome-topped prints from negatives of 1861, and on exceptionally large mounts. Several appear to be "new series" (1878-1881) images on different mounts, suggesting the items were not not all originally acquired as a single, uniform set. The 25 views by Jackson are from Montana and Wyoming; predominantly Yellowstone National Park. Included are the Yellowstone River, canyon, falls, Mystic Lake, geysers, the Gallatin River and canyon, Mt. Blackmore, and the Teton range. Some, if not all, date from the summer 1872 expedition of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories (the Hayden Survey).
ArchivalResource: 110 photographic prints : albumen ; mounts between 36 x 47 cm. and 62 x 86 cm.

Holladay, Samuel Wirt, 1823-1915. Autobiography and Reminiscence of Samuel Wirt Holladay, San Francisco, 1901.
Title:
Autobiography and Reminiscence of Samuel Wirt Holladay, San Francisco, 1901.
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 116-163, Vol. 5. This is a typed transcript of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. A photograph of Holladay is included in this account. He discusses family history, his youth, schools, jobs, his name and his wife's family. He describes his trip to California, fellow passengers, San Francisco during the Gold Rush and cases he worked on as attorney for the City, the Board of Education and the California Academy of Sciences. Reprinted is his letter (1892) on the naming of Auburn and an account of the North Fork trial (Auburn 1850), by a journalist for the "New York Journal of Commerce" over which Holladay presided as Alcalde. Involving an African-American and a white man accused of stealing from a fellow miner, both received 75 lashings and were banned from the mines. An addendum by him, "The Log Cabin Trial Scene", gives his view of the journalist's account of the trial.

Grahame Hardy Collection, 1849-1909.
The collection was assembled by author and collector Grahame H. Hardy. The documents and manuscripts demonstrate the range of legal, administrative, municipal, and real estate-related transactions initiated by railroad and mining interests, businessmen, and municipalities in the San Francisco Bay area, Northern California, and western Nevada. Included in this series are legal proceedings, title deeds, mining reports and claims. Correspondence includes business and personal letters to and from Northern California lawyers, railroad and mining entrepreneurs in California and Nevada, and parties involved in the construction of the Nicaragua Canal. Included in this series are letters pertaining to the case of Daniel Sill, a San Francisco-based blacksmith and the trial of A.J. Jackson, an African American tried and acquitted in Marysville, California. Lastly, ephemera include four items: a Mission Homestead Association certificate of stock; one check payable to Jack H. Haverly, a promoter of minstrel shows, from theater producers and brothers, Gustave Frohman and Charles Frohman; the baptism certificate of Everett Loftus Saxondale Kenna; and an undated glossary of mining terms. Prominent persons and organizations featured in the collection include: California Academy of Sciences, founded in 1853 as the one of the first scientific academies west of the Atlantic seaboard; Central Pacific Railroad Company, established in 1861 and financed in part by Leland Stanford and Collis P. Huntington, who are also mentioned in the collection; William Heath Davis (1822-1909), San Francisco merchant and author, spouse of Maria de Jesús Estudillo, who played a key role in the founding of the California cities of Oakland and San Diego; John Brooks Felton (1827-1877), San Francisco Bay Area lawyer and judge, as well as one-time mayor of Oakland, California; Joseph Pendleton Hoge (1810-1891), former U.S. Representative of Illinois and later lawyer and judge of the San Francisco Superior Court; and M.G. Upton, former official reporter of the California Assembly and author of the urban planning critique, "The Plan of San Francisco" (1869).a
