Geologist. Born on October 17, 1899 in Bismarck, North Dakota. He earned a B.A. in geology in 1922 from the University of Oregon, and a Ph. D. in economic geology from Harvard University in 1931. He was a professor and State Geologist. The American Geological Institute awards its most prestigious annual award in his honor.
