Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), Victorian romantic writer, was born Patrick Lafcadio Hearn of Irish-Greek parentage. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1869 from Europe and in 1890 went to Japan, where he wrote books and articles, taught in Japanese universities and became a citizen of Japan. He interpreted Japanese thought and life to the West.
Author and scholar of Japanese literature and culture.
Lafcadio Hearn, born in Greece and raised in Ireland, France, and England, was an American short-story and travel writer, journalist, literary critic, translator, poet, and author of culinary literature.
Hearn was a writer, translator, and teacher who introduced the culture and literature of Japan to the West. His own writings included novels, short stories, and essays on history and literary criticism.
Bouton was a New York bookdealer. Hearn, who moved to Japan in 1889, is best known for his writings on Japan.
Author.
Lafcadio Hearn was an American writer of Greek-Irish parentage. He wrote for newspapers in Cincinnati and New Orleans before moving to Japan. He married a Japanese woman and had a son, Kozuo Koizumi.
Writer.
Born in Greece in 1850 and educated in France and England, Hearn immigrated to the U.S. in 1869 and settled in Cincinnati. In 1877 he moved to New Orleans and worked as a journalist, most notably as literary editor of the Times-Democrat. After leaving New Orleans in 1887, he lived in Martinique before immigrating to Japan in 1890, where he resided until his death in 1904. His observations about the Creole societies of New Orleans and Martinique and the traditional society of Japan provided subject matter for much of his journalism and fiction.

Walt Whitman papers, 1854-1892
Title:
Walt Whitman papers 1854-1892
This is a synthetic collection covering the years 1854 to 1892 with some material still undated. Strengthsof the collection include nearly 30 poems or poem fragments and Whitman's autograph revision of the "Analysis ofPoems" by Dr. R. Bucke. This essay was written for Bucke's authorized biography (Walt Whitman, 1883) and Whitman'sextensive revisions were incorporated before publication. The correspondence includes two longer runs, one toWilliam O' Connor and the other to his wife Ellen O'Connor. The O'Connors were active in a number of social causes,as well as devoted advocates of Whitman and his writing. William O'Connor, author of The Good Gray Poet (1866), wasone of Whitman's closest friends until an argument in 1873 caused a break in their friendship. Others who figureprominently in the Berg Collection's Whitman materials include John Burroughs (1837-1921), nature writer, literarycritic, and author of Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person (1867); Peter Doyle and Harry Stafford, young friendsof Whitman's; and Richard Maurice Bucke (1837-1902), Whitman's authorized biographer, friend and literary executor. In addition to writing Walt Whitman (1883) and Walt Whitman, Man and Poet (1897), Bucke co-edited with HoraceTraubel and Thomas Harned The Complete Writings (1902).

Autograph letter signed : Tokyo, to Emil Gullman, 1898 Jan. 1.
Enclosing a letter written (but apparently not sent) to the Stetson Company the previous year (MA 2532.1), and discussing his endeavors to purchase Stetson hats in Japan. Giving his address in English, but enclosing (see accompanying material) slips printed with his address in Japanese to be pasted on Gullman's returning envelopes, instructing him to write only "Tokyo, Japan" on the envelope. Discussing Stetson hats, mentioning "I don't remember precisely what I said to Professor Foxwell about the Stetson hat; but I guess that his statement [to Gullman] represented symbolically my appreciation of its indestructibility." Noting that they were popular "among the planters" when Hearn was in the South, and suggesting that it might be made popular in the West Indies, if only "the agent would risk his life in trying to push it during the fever season." Noting that with Gullman's success in Central America, he "might "be just the right man for the West Indies."

Letters : to James Daniel Hearn, 1890 and undated.
Letters concerning James' introduction as Lafcadio's lost brother, the two having been separated when James was an infant. The letters also contain a history of the Hearns' mother, and father Charles Hearn, and information about Lafcadio and his life. All but one of the letters are undated and only one gives location, but contextual information suggests that at least two were written before Lafcadio went to Japan (1889) and at least two were written after his arrival in Japan.

Octave Thanet). The originals are the property of the Abernethy Library. The White letters contain occasional references to Edgar Allan Poe [partially published: Arthur Hobson Quinn, EDGAR ALLAN POE: A CRITICAL BIOGRAPHY (New York, 1941)]. The Hayne letters are addressed to Julia Caroline (Ripley) Dorr and contain comments on her poetry and on contemporary writers. Hearn's letters were written from Japan to his publishers. The letters of Simms and Alice French contain literary comment, but those of Heyward, Johnston, and Kennedy are largely notes of thanks or requests for addresses.

Title:
Autograph letter signed : Tokyo, to Emil Gullman, 1900 Nov. 15.
Discussing the possibility of Gullman publishing a volume of Hearn's works. Stating that Hearn has apparently misunderstood Gullman's letters and emphatically stating that he does not wish to publish the "work of my foolish days," noting that "no author wants to have his earlier work republished: on the contrary he wishes to destroy it, to annihilate forever even the memory thereof." Discussing his readership, noting that his works do not (and neither does Hearn wish them to) circulate widely. Further discussing and his works, noting that he wishes he could "annihilate" Chita. Persuading Gullman to wait until Hearn has written a work specifically for wider circulation ("a volume of American sketches, for example"), noting that "to reprint early trash now would later spoil your market." Stating that "all my literary work, in its present shape, up to the year 1895, is RUBBISH."
