This collection contains artwork, greeting cards, magazines, maps, microfilm, newsclippings regarding Lafcadio Hearn and Japanese life and culture, photographs, postcards, research notebooks, and travel brochures. The majority of the collection relates to McClelland's research on Hearn, and includes her correspondence with his son, Kazuo Koizumi, and notes on the Philadelphia ophthalmologist, George M. Gould.

Dorothea Bryan (1897-1995) was born in Japan, and was also raised in Wooster, Ohio. She attended Wooster College and completed her undergraduate degree at Ohio State. She then married Iowa State College (University) professor John B. McClelland and during her time in Ames, she became interested in the writings of Lafcadio Hearn and conducted research on his life.
