Apologizing for his delay in answering her letters and expressing appreciation for her friendship. Noting that he has been busy the past two days, and referencing some research he is doing for her, alluding to John D. Caldwell. Reporting that he has been busy all day among "noisy crowds of enthusiastic catholics," and discussing the difficulty of writing letters so late at night.
