Leichhardt, Ludwig, 1813-1848. Letters.
Title:
Letters. 1844-1847.
There are 3 letters. The earliest, dated 3.6.1844 is addressed by Leichhardt to "Isaacs Esq., Darling Downs, Moreton Bay". (The correct name of the addressee was Frederick Neville Isaac, a squatter). The letter proposes to send botanical specimens from Sydney and Moreton Bay to England. The second, dated 18.9.1847 is from Phillip Parker King (Australia's first Rear-Admiral). It speaks of a member of the Condamine River expedition some weeks earlier, Henry Turnbull, spreading prejudicial stories about Leichhardt's leadership; and demonstrates the course of the Victoria River, N.T. The third letter, dated 10.10.1847, is from Leichhardt to Isaacs and discusses aspects of the recent expedition; Turnbull's behaviour; and the hospitality of his friends in Brisbane.

Letter [manuscript]. 1846.
The letter to Miss Macarthur was written the day before Leichhardt left Stroud, N.S.W., on the first stage of his 500 mile journey to the Gulf of Carpenteria. Leichhardt warmly thanks Miss Macarthur for her kindness and entreats her to remember him in her prayers. Miss Macarthur, writing some years after Leichhardt's disappearance, has annotated the letter in her own hand, with reflections on the 1846-1847 expedition and that of 1848 before which she made her last contact with Leichhardt.

Nicholson family. Letters and transcriptions [manuscript].
Title:
Letters and transcriptions [manuscript]. 1818-1962.
Thirty-eight letters written by members of the Nicholson family arranged in Series A to E, and numbered within each series. There are copies of four additional letters from institutional collections elsewhere in Australia. There are many manuscript copies, additional to the originals. There is only one letter of Ludwig Leichhardt and only one letter from a Nicholson son in Australia: Mark, Mount Macedon, to Robert (Lowther) and wife, E(a)2. The letters combine personal and family detail (sometimes rather trivial) with some interesting facts, as well as offering some precise and personal details about the life and character of Ludwig Leichhardt. There is also a bound typed transcript of forty-two letters, prepared by Mr R.M. Jukes in 1962 (a descendant through his mother of the Nicholson family). The volume includes useful editorial comment, summaries of the letters and some appendices. A family tree is also inserted in the volume. Also includes a photograph of memorial plaque dedicated to Rev. Mark Nicholson. nary N.
