The letters are small part of the voluminous correspondence of the family of Reverend Mark Nicholson and his wife Lucy. Their youngest child, also Mark, was the recipient of most of them and their elder son William is the writer of a great many. The Reverend Mark Nicholson was appointed Principal of Codrington College, Barbados, in 1801. In the 1830s his sons, John and William were studying at German universities and came to know Ludwig Leichhardt. Mark Junior emigrated to Australia in 1840. Leichhardt followed in 1842 and began his exploring expeditions.
