F. W. L. Leichhardt, explorer, was born in Prussia. He emigrated to Sydney in 1842 and the following year embarked on the first of series of explorations into Northern New South Wales and Queensland. Sir Lionel Lindsay was well known as an etcher, watercolour painter, wood-engraver, black and white artist, book illustrator and art critic. He worked as a freelance artist and journalist, and cartoonist for the "Evening News". He travelled extensively in Europe and was knighted in 1941 for his services to art.
