F. W. L. Leichhardt, explorer, was born in Prussia. He emigrated to Sydney in 1842 and the following year embarked on the first of a series of explorations into Northern New South Wales and Queensland. In 1848 during his expedition to cross the continent from Brisbane to Perth he was lost without trace. W. A.
W. A. Nicholson met Leichhardt at Berlin in 1834 and took the place of Liechhardt's recently deceased aunt as patron and supplier of funds for study. Nicholson eventually became Leichhardt's European agent.
