F. W. L. Leichhardt, explorer, was born in Prussia. He emigrated to Sydney in 1842 and the following year embarked on the first of series of explorations into Northern New South Wales and Queensland. Mr J.A. White, surgeon, acted as honorary medical officer from January 1866 to June 1867 with an expedition organised by the ladies of Melbourne to search for Ludwig Leichhardt's party lost in the Carpentaria region 18 years previously.
