The papers, compiled, extracted and translated by L. L. Politzer are in four parts: 1) A bibliography of Leichhardt (1953); 2) Extracts from letters to M. G. Durand, a botanist in Paris (1842-1844); 3) A collection of documents and letters on Leichhardt (1840-1925); 4) Letters (1842-1848) and a translated extract from "Dr. Ludwig Leichhardt's Briefe an Seine Angehorigen" by G. Neumayer (1881).

F. W. L. Leichhardt, explorer, was born in Prussia. He emigrated to Sydney in 1842 and the following year embarked on the first of series of explorations into Northern New South Wales and Queensland.
