(William) Bliss Carman (1861-1929) was a Canadian poet and editor. Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, he studied at the universities of New Brunswick and Harvard. He is usually grouped with the Confederation Poets, who developed a distinctively Canadian poetic voice in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Yet this identification with the Confederation group is somewhat misleading as Carman spent much of his life in New England and many readers assumed that he was American. Carman edited and wrote for many influential literary publications including the Independent, the Cosmopolitan, and the Atlantic Monthly .
Carman was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, on April 15, 1861. He was the son of William Carman and Sophia Bliss. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1881 with honors in Latin and Greek. He received his masters from the University of New Brunswick. He read law and studied engineering. Later he taught school from 1884-1886. Though he traveled some, he lived in New Canaan, Conn., and he always retained his Canadian citizenship.
Carman was Canada's major poet, generally referred to as the Poet Laureate of Canada. He was awarded the Lorne Pierce Medal, which is the highest literary distinction a Canadian can win. Though he is primarily known for his poetry, he served as assistant editor of the New York Independent and editor of Chap Book in Boston. Also, he worked on The Cosmopolitan Magazine, Current Literature, and The Atlantic Monthly.

Title:
Papers of the Baldwin family, 1845-1943.
The collection contains 15 letters, 1845-1856, from John Hargon, Madison County, Miss., to Edward Lloyd, Easton, Md., regarding the management of Lloyd's Mississippi plantation, the cotton market, the health of plantation slaves, the Mexican-American War, and rising tensions between Northern and Southern states; and letters, 1857-1858, from George F. Brinsfield to Edward Lloyd, regarding the management of Lloyd's plantation. Personal correspondence of Gladys Baldwin Barr includes letters, 1913-1927, from Bliss Carman regarding Carman's poetry; his travels in Canada and the U.S.; his health, especially his trips to John Harvey Kellogg's Battle Creek Sanitarium and other spas; Woodrow Wilson's role in World War I; and Baldwin's studies and travels in the U.S. and abroad. Other topics include a novelization of Edward Childs Carpenter's The Cinderella man; the suicide of a friend; religion, especially Catholicism; women's suffrage and the labor movement; poetry and theater; social and family matters; Baldwin's marriage to Stringfellow Barr; and Carman's affection for Baldwin. Of interest are a 1914 letter from Carman ("Willie") to Baldwin ("Grandmother"), portraying their age difference as a humorous family romance; manuscripts, typescripts, and clippings, 1914-1927, of poems by Carman; and a newspaper clipping, n.d., regarding him. There are also letters, 1919-1924, from Bliss Carman to his physician, Gertrude M. Johnson, regarding the Battle Creek health regimen, World War I, his travels, and Gladys Baldwin Barr; and a letter, 30 December 1921, Carman to Stringfellow Barr regarding an essay on the French that Barr hoped to publish in an American magazine. There are also photographs, 1920-1929, of Bliss Carman; a 1930 letter from Lorne Pierce to Gladys Baldwin Barr regarding a proposed biography of Carman; and miscellaneous correspondence, 1936-1943, of Gladys Baldwin Barr, regarding a stay in London in 1936, Giuseppe Mazzini, her nephew's post in Sicily during World War II, and life in Reading, Eng., during World War II.

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.

Carryl, Guy Wetmore, 1873-1904. Letters of Guy Wetmore Carryl, 1896-1903.
Title:
Letters of Guy Wetmore Carryl, 1896-1903.
Letters primarily relate to Carryl's work as a poet. In a letter to Copeland and Day dated January 27, 1897, Carryl wishes to submit a volume of poems for publication, with an introduction by Edmund Clarence Stedman. He compares the poems to those by Scollard and Carman; the size of the volume would be similar to "Hills of Song" or "The Road to Castaly," and Carryl assures a sale of 500 copies in New York City. In a letter to Carolyn Wells, dated November 27, 1903, Carryl thanks Wells for a marked copy of "The Reader" containing compliments from Sir Herbert Stanley. Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. Title:
Letters of Guy Wetmore Carryl [manuscript], 1896-1903.
In a letter to Mrs. Henry dated 1896 Carryl looks forward to a small remembrance as a reward for kind words written about the correspondent's daughter.

Modern Poetry Collection of Miscellaneous Manuscripts, 1920-1964
Title:
Modern Poetry Collection of Miscellaneous Manuscripts 1920-1964
The Modern Poetry Collection of Miscellaneous Manuscripts consists of miscellaneous contemporary poetry manuscripts collected by Judith Bond while she was Curator of the Harriet Monroe Library of Modern Poetry. Most of the manuscripts were contributed by the poets at Bond’s request, and several of them show the work either in rough draft or in successive stages of completion. Also appearing in the collection is a fair amount of correspondence, most of it exchanges between Judith Bond and the various poets whose work appears within. The collection itself spans the period of 1920 through 1964, with some of the material remaining undated.

Carman, Bliss, 1861-1929. Bliss Carman papers [manuscript], 1891-1929.
Title:
Bliss Carman papers [manuscript], 1891-1929.
The collection consists chiefly of typescripts of poems copied out for Agnes Cook and letters to her. Carman discusses the writing and publication of his poems; expounds the doctrines of Unitrinianism and the fallacies of Christian Science; and shares misgivings (early in 1917) about Woodrow Wilson with his "moral cowardice and callous egotism." He also mentions the selling of letters from departed celebrities to autograph hunters and recommends she reads Vachel Lindsay. Correspondence mentions Richard Hovey, Mary Perry King, Odell Shepard, Anne Higginson Spicer, and Susan Hays Ward. The collection also contains an inscribed photograph post card of Carman; three printed copies of his poems; a partial bibliography; and obituaries.
