Sun Company. Records, 1889-1984.
Title:
Records, 1889-1984.
The Sun Company records document the history of the company from its origins in the 1880s through the 1968 Sunray DX merger. The records make it clear that Sun was a classic family-managed firm and very tightly controlled by the Pews. The records, reflecting this pre-modern corporate structure, contain a mixture of personal and business materials. Record Group I, in fact, comprises the business papers of the various members of the Pew family who played important roles within the company. The production records are derived, for the most part, from the office of J. Edgar Pew; refining records were generated by Robert C. Pew and Arthur E. Pew, Jr.; and management records come from the offices of Joseph Newton Pew and J. Howard Pew.

Title:
Records, 1909-1952 (bulk 1914-1948).
The records primarily document the presidency of Lammot du Pont (1926-1940), with some fragmentary records from the Irénée du Pont period (1919-26). The records describe the Du Pont Company's transformation into a diversified chemical company in the years after the First World War. Records document the organization of the Chemical Department under the leadership of Dr. Charles Lee Reese. The collection describes Du Pont's research and development program which during these years focused on dyes, celluloid, cellophane, plastics, ammonia, textile fibers, and artificial rubber. The evolving relationship between corporate strategy, organizational structure, research and development is described. The records also trace the company's post World War I public relations campaign during which it sought to overcome the "Merchant of Death" label. Du Pont's response to the Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, and the C.I.O.'s organizing campaigns are also described in these records. There is also much information on company advertising, participation in the New York World's Fair of 1939-1940, and attempts to market Du Pont products or establish plants in foreign countries, particularly Chile, China, Japan, and in Russia both before and after the revolution.

Title:
Oral history interview with Chalmer G. Kirkbride 1993 July 15
Chalmer Kirkbride begins the interview by describing his family background and childhood in Oklahoma and Kansas. During high school, Kirkbride's interests were influenced by his brother-in-law, a chemist for Sherwin-Williams. Kirkbride studied chemical engineering at the University of Michigan and spent summers working in the oil fields. He was recruited on campus by Standard Oil of Indiana and worked at the Whiting refinery. Kirkbride also worked for the Pan American Transport Company and Magnolia Petroleum Corporation before being appointed as the first distinguished engineering professor at Texas A&M University. In 1947, Kirkbride returned to industry when he was recruited by the Houdry Process Corporation. He became president of Houdry before moving to Sun Oil Company, where he created a commercial development department and began taking an active interest in environmental issues. After his retirement Kirkbride became president of the Cecil County Anti-Pollution league, founded Kirkbride Associates, and participated in board activities at Widener University.

Title:
Horace G. Richards papers 1928-1984
Horace G. Richards (1906-1984) was a geologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia and an authority on the geologic formations of the Atlantic coastal plain. His research specialty focused on geology and paleontology of the Quaternary Period (approximately the past 1.8 million years), but his research interests also included Cenozoic mollusca, and marine Pleistocene geology and paleontology of the Atlantic coastal plain. Additionally, he studied climate change and coastal shorelines, which required extensive fieldwork, taking him all over the world. Richards was also an adjunct professor at two universities and frequently guest lectured at various institutions. The Horace G. Richards papers document various aspects of his professional career, from his graduate education at the University of Pennsylvania to his retirement from the multiple positions he held. Materials in this collection include: general business correspondence; photographs and slides from his field work and expeditions; photographic catalog notebooks; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and announcements; travel expenses and reports; and the records of the Atlantic Coastal Plains Project, the International Union of Quaternary Research, the and various professional societies. Also in the collection are certificates, academic materials, student papers, radio scripts, audio reels, and manuscripts of Richards' writings and presentations. The majority of the collection is made up of Richards' correspondence and extensive slides from his travels all over the world. This collection is of special interest for those interested in the history of science, especially the Quaternary Period, geology, paleontology, mollusca, invertebrate fossils, climate change and changing shore lines. Title:
Oral history interviews with R. Anderson Pew, 1989.
Pew focuses on the Glenmede Trust Company during the 1970s and 1980s, especially its Board of Directors and the Board's Committee on Grants. He discusses the issue of fidelity to the principles and wishes or the founders of the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the relations betwen the Glenmede Trust Company and the Sun Oil Company. He notes the challenges in 1989 of Glenmede's ownership of Sun and Oryx stock with regard to its responsibilities to the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Pew family, and the Sun and Oryx companies. He discusses the changes in the kinds of grantmaking, from reactive to proactive (including Trust-initiated programs), as well as changes in the areas of grantmaking (including the addition of the conservation field). He recalls Glenmede board members and staff, as well as Pew family members. He also notes his community service outside of Glenmede, particularly his work with gangs in Philadelphia.
