Herbert Welsh established the Indian Rights Association in 1882, and served as the organization's corresponding secretary, president and president emeritus. The Association investigated and publicized conditions of Indians, and was particularly successful in arousing public interest and exposing frauds on reservations.

Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs
Title:
Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs
The Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs originated in 1869 in answer to President Grant's Peace Policy, officially giving management of Native Americans in the Central Superintendency (Kansas and the "Indian Territory") to the Orthodox branch of the Society of Friends. These are primarily letters, reports and some miscellaneous manuscripts chiefly addressed to the chairman of the committee, Edward M. Wistar; articles, plans, maps and statistics related to the committee's work. Most of the material deals with the work of Friends in running mission stations in Oklahoma to the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma (Bah Kho-je), the Modoc Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, the Osage Nation (Wahzhazhe) and other Native American peoples.

Of particular concern to Welsh is the fact that Sioux children were allowed to sign the purchase agreement. Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Letter : Pine Ridge Agency, Dakota Territory, to Rt. Rev. William H. Hare, 1883 Jun 20.
ALS written on United States Indian Service letterhead describing the contents of a letter to Indian Agent Dr. [Valentine] McGillycuddy from the Department of the Interior dated October 18, 1881, regarding the right of way purchased from the Sioux by the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad. Of particular concern to Welsh is the fact that Sioux children were allowed to sign the purchase agreement. He also states that he has enjoyed Hare's society during his visit to the Agency, and has gained valuable information which he should be able to make good use of when he returns to the East.
