The ties between the Episcopal Church and Boise State University are old ones. The university was founded as Boise Junior College by the Right Rev. Middleton S. Barnwell, Bishop of Idaho, in 1932. It remained a church institution during the first few years of its existence.

Daniel Sylvester Tuttle, Episcopal bishop, was born in Windhand, New York in 1837. In 1866, he was elected the Bishop of Montana, Idaho, and Utah. He moved to Virginia City, Montana in 1867 and established St. Paul's Church, the first Episcopal congregation in the territory. He later moved to Salt Lake City and in 1886 he became Bishop of Missouri and moved to St. Louis. Tuttle was the author of several books including his reminiscences, which were published in 1906 under the title Reminiscences of a missionary bishop. He died in 1923.

Daniel Sylvester Tuttle (1837-1923) was a Bishop of the Episcopal Church and then served as the Presiding Bishop of Episcopal Church in America.

Daniel Sylvester Tuttle was born 26 January 1837 in Windham, Greene, New York to Daniel Bliss and Abagail C. Stimson Tuttle. He married Harriet Minerva Foote 12 September 1865 in Morris, Otsego, New York. He was ordained a Bishop of the Episcopal Church in 1866 and served as the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in America from 1903-1923. Daniel died 17 April 1923.
