Richard Parnell Notebook, 1839-1840

Title: Richard Parnell Notebook 1839-1840

In 1839-1840, the ichthyologist Richard Parnell left London for a collecting expedition to Jamaica and a tour of museum collections in the United States. An authority on both fishes and grasses, Parnell published two noted works as a young man, his (Edinburgh: Neill and Co., 1838) and , 2 vols. (Edinburgh: Blackwood, 1842-1845). He appears, however, to have abandoned publication in 1845, although he continued collecting for many years. The notebook kept by Richard Parnell during his voyage to the West Indies and United States in 1839-1840 contains little narrative, but dozens of pencil and watercolor sketches of the marine life that absorbed his interest, primarily fishes. Most sketches are accompanied by brief notes on the anatomy of the fish, sometimes with close-ups of fin structures, air bladders, or the digestive tract and stomach. Although collecting localities are seldom recorded, the majority of specimens seem to have been collected in Jamaica, with at least a few observed in vitro at the New York Museum. William Temple Franklin Papers, 1775-1819

Title: William Temple Franklin Papers 1775-1819

The son of William Franklin, Royal Governor of New Jersey, William Temple Franklin worked as aide to his grandfather, Benjamin Franklin, when the latter served as minister to France during the American Revolution. A bonvivant, Temple received his highest public appointment as Secretary to the American delegation at the Treaty of Versailles in 1782-1783, largely through the influence of his famous grandfather, but never again attained a significant post. As Franklin's literary heir, he edited and published a three volume set of his grandfather's writings in 1817. He married his long time mistress a few months before his death in Paris in 1823. The William Temple Franklin Papers provides a richly detailed portrait of the life of the grandson of Benjamin Franklin, and consists largely of letters received during the years that Temple served as his grandfather's aide in France, 1776-1785. Although much of the correspondence is routine, during this period, Temple received regular reports from friends and diplomatic colleagues relaying information on the American Revolution, the course of diplomatic and peace negotiations, and French public opinion on Benjamin Franklin and the new United States. The collection is also a rich resource for information on the personal lives of the Franklins, including interesting correspondence from Temple's relatives William Franklin, Elizabeth Franklin, Sarah Franklin Bache, and Jonathan Williams, and his mistress Blanchette Caillot.

Typescript, probably created in the early twentieth century, from a 19th century transcription of a letterbook, 1778 March 5-1779 July 30, of Admiral John Paul Jones, to which has been added additional correspondents and extracts from letters and logbooks in the possession of the Naval History Society. Letters, principally written while Jones was engaged in operations in Brest, concern his movements, naval engagements, requests for money and supplies, disposition of captured vessels and prisoners, attempted capture of the Earl of Selkirk, care of the wounded, conditions on shipboard, and outbreaks of smallpox among his crew. Many of the letters additionally touch on Jones's desire for professional preferment and recognition for his accomplishments. Correspondents include: Edward Bancroft, Le Ray de Chaumont, Benjamin Franklin, James Moylan, John Ross, Antoine de Sartine, Jonathon Williams, and many others. Includes partial index.
