The records are files of Robert C. Sahlin, a member of Lukenweld's sales staff. Sahlin joined the Lukens Steel Company as a sales engineer on October 15, 1928, and was transferred to Lukenweld sales on February 9, 1938. From December 1941 to September 6, 1945, he was Manager of Sales. He was then an outside salesman for Lukenweld until his retirement in 1954.

The collection assembled by Stewart Huston reflects his interest in genealogy and family history. It consists primarily of genealogical data collected by him on the Armour, Beheathland, Bernard, Buchanan, Coates, Dade, Fleming, Huston, Irick, Leaken, Lomax, Lukens, MacGregor, Massey, Mendenhall, Pennock, Reid, Stewart, Washington, Webb, and Welman families. Members of Huston's paternal line were primarily Quaker settlers of the Delaware Valley, while his maternal ancestors came from Georgia. The records include genealogical notes, copies of wills, deeds and inventories, correspondence, biographical data, newsclippings and estate papers. Among the more interesting items are a typescript of the autobiography of Rebecca Webb (Pennock) Lukens, Stewart Huston's great-grandmother; also her agreements for the production of boiler plate, work contracts and cancelled checks (1826-1828); copies and extracts of papers of Isabella Pennock Lukens Huston, including reminiscences of political rallies during the campaigns of 1840 and 1844; a typescript of the journal of Elizabeth Webb (1697-1699); 5 Civil War letters of William A. Reid of Savannah, Ga.; family papers and 5 patents of Charles Lukens Huston; business agreements of Charles Lukens; estate papers of Dr. Robert Mendenhall Huston; and about 135 items pertaining to the Lukens Steel Company.

The Public Relations department vertical file makes up the bulk of the Institute's records. It contains publications of the Institute and its member firms, press releases and speeches by Institute and industry executives. There are approximately 7,700 pamphlets and company reports, 69,000 mounted clippings, 22,000 press releases and 11,000 items of miscellaneous printed matter and ephemera. The material covers company histories, descriptions of products and processes and general topics of interest to the steel industry such as automation, industrial and labor relations, standardization and atomic energy. The pamphlets describe the entire scope of the industry from basic raw materials and other metals used in combination or alloys with steel, through the various types of steelmaking apparatus and processes to finished goods like pipe, wire, bridges, automobiles, machinery and ordnance. They also commemorate the use of steel products in trade fairs and exhibitions like the 1964-65 New York World's Fair.

The records, 1958-1996, include biographical material on committee members and othersassociated iated with UPAC as well as correspondence, minutes, hand written notes, legal documents, newspaper clippings, news releases, memos, scrapbooks, programs and photographs of activities. Also in the collection are papers of Dr. W.T.M. Johnson. These include indexed compilations of his published letters as well as papers related to his time as a member of the faculty at Lincoln University. Earliest records in the collection include material related to initial reform endeavors by Dr. Johnson, the Human Relations Council, and others. These included the segregation of West Chester's YMCA, Brotherhood Week Celebration, Career Conferences for Negro Youth, improving African American students' school performance, tutoring of students, etc. Records for the Student Equality Union and the West Chester Human Relations Council are also part of the collection. In Box 2, are Dr. Johnson's records of his association with Lincoln University. The collection then continues chronologically with UPAC's organization in 1966. Records of topics with sufficient data are filed separately within their time frame, for example, the Lukens suit (boxes 4 through 7). The collection ends with materials on the 1996 UPAC sponsored meeting on the significance of the Goodman vs. Lukens Steel civil suit.

This body of Lukens Steel Company records consists of corporate records, mostly from the Secretary's Office, that passed into the custody of Bethlehem Steel. There is some overlap with the larger body of Lukens Steel records that was received through members of the Huston family and forms the Hagley Museum and Library's Accession 50. The records date from 1874-1969, but with bulk dates from the 1940s-1950s.

Lukens Steel Company. Executive officer files, 1903-1979.

The records are a selection of files from some of the executive officers of the Lukens Steel Company of Coatesville, Pa. They begin in 1903, when the company discontinued the use of general letterbooks. Only two of the company's top officer, Charles Lukens Huston and his son Stewart Huston, preserved their files more or less intact. The other series are fragments preserved by either of the two Hustons. Taken together, the files cover most of the important developments in the 20th century history of the company, but with a shifting emphasis. Subjects include the electrification and modernization of the plant, the employment of African-Americans and European immigrants, the impact of the Depression, the cultivation of new markets, World War II business, and post-war conversion and growth. One of the more interesting units contains minutes and memoranda of the Business Problems Group of the Society of Friends, an group of Quaker industrialists who attempted to respond to the labor radicalism and strife of the 1915-23 period with Quaker-style conciliation and consensus-building. Post-1949 presidential files consist entirely of speeches and public relations material. The files of Charles Lukens Huston are relatively complete. He was in charge of operations and production and also served as Works Manager until 1925. From 1928 to 1963 the files of his son, Stewart Huston, primarily reflect his duties as corporate secretary and his role representing the company in a variety of trade and civic associations. After his election to the vice presidency following his father's death in 1951, his files contain an incresing amount of material generated by the board of directors and its committess, providing more detail on executive decisions. The files of both Hustons reflect their adherence to conservative and evangelical causes. There are a number of interesting tangential items relating to bomb shelters and uranium prospecting in the 1950s, and examples of health-food diet regimens from the 1920s. The files of Darwin S. Wolcott and the comptroller's office include material on Lukens's contribution to the Manhattan Project. The files of the treasurer's office include material from the Coatesville Opportunities Council regarding rehabilitation of low-cost housing in the late 1960s.
