The Alleghany Ore and Iron Company was incorporated under the laws of Virginia on March 4, 1902. It operated blast furnaces at Iron Gate, Buena Vista, and Shenandoah, Virginia, and iron mines at Lignite in Botetourt County. It became a subsidiary of the Lukens Iron & Steel Company of Coatesville, Pa., in 1907. The furnaces were closed between 1917 and 1923 and the iron mines around 1925.
