Duveen Brothers records, 1876-1981, 1909-1964
Title:
Duveen Brothers records 1876-1981 1909-1964
Notable art dealers from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The records provide a detailed view of the Duveen Brothers business activities in London, Paris, and New York. Although the archive extends from 1876 to 1981, the bulk of the material dates from Joseph Duveen's tenure as president of the firm, 1909-1939, and the period 1939-1964 when Edward Fowles directed the firm (with Armand Lowengard until 1943). The mass of documents, such as cables and letters, invoices, and ledger and stock books, give a day-by-day account of art dealing, business strategy, and the individuals involved. Included are some records from the Kleinberger Galleries, 1906-1971, and 6 linear feet of Edward Flowles's papers.

Metcalfe, Philip, 1735-1818. Papers concerning the Sir Joshua Reynolds estate, 1785-1901 (inclusive), 1791-1799 (bulk).
Title:
Papers concerning the Sir Joshua Reynolds estate, 1785-1901 (inclusive), 1791-1799 (bulk).
Series I consists mostly of letters received by Metcalfe as executor of the Sir Joshua Reynolds estate. Two letters are addressed to co-executor Edmund Burke. Other notable correspondents include Charles James Fox, Edmond Malone, Reynolds's niece Mary Palmer, and Benjamin West. Most of the letters relate to funeral arrangements and estate finances. Series II includes detailed notes by Metcalfe on the arrangements for Reynolds's funeral, as well as financial accounts with several estate creditors and beneficiaries. A list of Reynolds paintings sold at auction is of particular interest. Preceding one of the estate account books is a subscription list, probably begun by Reynolds in 1785, to raise a monument to Samuel Johnson at St. Paul's Cathedral. Series III, the Metcalfe family papers, are of primarily genealogical interest.

Title:
Notebooks and research files, 1801-1987 (bulk 1924-1979).
Collection documents Waterhouse's scholarly career. A major part of the archive consists of 67 notebooks, maintained from 1924 until his death in 1985, in which he recorded in detail every work of art seen in his travels in Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. Research files include notes, draft catalogues, essays, lectures, photographs, annotated printed catalogues (mainly of British collections), and correspondence with art historians, curators, collectors and dealers. The subject matter covered includes British country houses, Reynolds, Gainsborough, El Greco, Italy and Italian Baroque art. There are a few personal items, such as photographs of Waterhouse's family. Included are photocopies of diaries (originals 1852-1857) thought to be the diaries of Sir Charles Eastlake, former Director of the National Gallery, London.

Autograph letters signed from Sir Joshua Reynolds, London, to David Garrick and Edmund Malone [manuscript], 1774-ca. 1790.
In the letter to Malone, Reynolds discusses some old words and phrases and also asks him to examine critically the Discourse he has sent and to add a little elegance. Also includes notes probably intended for the Second and Fourth Discourses, [1769?-1771?] (transcribed in F.W. Hilles's The literary career of Sir Joshua Reynolds, 1936, p. 218, 220; and Sir Joshua's "Statement, relative to the Picture of Macbeth [intended for the Shakespeare Gallery]. December 1791", proposing that the price be determined by arbitration). There are two pen and ink sketches, verso of (3) and (6).
