William Cotton of Ivybridge (1794-1763) received his B. A. from Exeter College, Oxford, in 1814, and his M.A. in 1818. He conserved and enlarged the Cottonian Collection of art he inherited from his father, adding a large amount of material related to Sir Joshua Reynolds. In 1852, he donated the collection to the Plymouth City Museum.
