Epitaphs selected from various quarters by I. I. S., 1856.

Holograph collection of about 50 epitaphs, both serious verses written for both famous and unknown persons as well as more general and lighthearted verses. The collection contains epitaphs for William Hogarth; Joshua Reynolds; and Benjamin Franklin; as well as for "an infant Elizabeth Stoke, Dunbar, in the Church of Dumfries"; a card player; and a blacksmith. Elsewhere, the manuscript records an epitaph titled Epitaph of fools. At the end of the volume are several humorous epitaphs labeled "A few specimens of epitaphs which should not have been written, much less allowed to intrude upon holy ground." The epitaphs are annotated with the names of the churches in which they were found, and pasted in at the beginning of each epitaph is an illuminated letter.
