Favorably comparing himself to Sir Joshua [Reynolds], noting "I think there may be one point in which I excel Sir Joshua, and it is that which has enabled me to be so fortunate in my progress. I mean the knowledge of those frowns and lines which constitute Beauty." Offering as proof his paintings of Cato, Hamlet, and Locke in the current exhibition.
