American Fund for Public Service records 1922-1941
The American Fund for Public Service, also known as the Garland Fund, was created in 1922 by Charles Garland to support radical social and economic causes. The board of directors included prominent leaders of the labor movement, the Socialist and Communist parties, and civil rights and minority groups. From 1922 to 1941 the Fund gave nearly two million dollars to a variety of left-wing organizations and enterprises, such as labor unions, cooperatives, schools for workers, radical publications, bail and legal defense funds, and civil liberties, penal reform, and minority rights groups. Records of the American Fund include internal and external correspondence of members of the board of directors, treasurer, and legal counsel, 1922-1941; board of directors meeting minutes, 1922-1941; several committee reports and surveys, 1923-1939; memoranda and reports on policy, 1922-1932; auditor's reports, 1922-1941; lists of appropriations and loans, 1922-1941; and application files for each individual or organization requesting assistance. Grant and loan application files account for 70% of the collection and contain the correspondence of the applicant with the Fund and often a variety of supporting materials such as reports, memoranda, publications, financial records, leaflets, as well as comments by Fund officials regarding the application. Files are divided into two series: Applications Accepted and Applications Refused.

The Hadassah Medical Organization Papers in the Hadassah Archives
The Hadassah Medical Organization Papers in the Hadassah Archives document Hadassah's work in providing health care resources in Palestine since 1918. The activities documented revolved around the development of the Hadassah Hospital, health centers, dental centers, occupational and rehabilitative services, medical, nursing, dental and pharmacy schools as well as myriad educative and preventive projects, especially those aimed at infant care. The documents also reflect the history of the Palestine and the establishment of the State of Israel from a unique perspective. The collection contains correspondence, reports, minutes, publicity and fund-raising related materials, newspaper clippings and articles, personal accounts, financial records and statistical reports.

Personal and professional correspondence, writings, speeches, diaries, appointment books, travel reports, articles, photos, clippings, and files of The Nation from the 1930s to the 1950s document Kirchwey's career. Administrative papers of The Nation reflect her involvement with the legal, financial, and staff problems of the magazine. Much of the editorial material and correspondence illustrate the issues on which The Nation focused: fascism, the New Deal, World War II, and anti-communism. The files of The Nation Associates, a non-profit membership corporation founded in 1943, contain correspondence, reports, and printed material describing its activities on behalf of the establishment of Israel and the overthrow of Franco in Spain. Also includes papers of Alvarez del Vayo, the last foreign minister of the Republican government of Spain; reports and correspondence of other organizations with which Kirchwey was associated; and notes for her unpublished book on The Nation.

Myron Bement Smith collection
Myron Bement Smith collection, circa 1910-1970
Title:
Myron Bement Smith collection
The Myron Bement Smith collection consists of two parts, the papers of Myron Bement Smith and his wife Katharine and the Islamic Archives. It contains substantial material about his field research in Italy in the 1920s and his years working on Islamic architecture in Iran in the 1930s. Letters describe the milieu in which he operated in Rochester NY and New York City in the 1920s and early 1930s; the Smiths' life in Iran from 1933 to 1937; and the extensive network of academic and social contacts that Myron and Katharine developed and maintained over his lifetime. The Islamic Archives was a project to which Smith devoted most of his professional life. It includes both original materials, such as his photographs and notes, and items acquired by him from other scholars or experts on Islamic art and architecture. Smith intended the Archives to serve as a resource for scholars interested in the architecture and art of the entire Islamic world although he also included some materials about non-Islamic architecture.

Baron de Hirsch Fund Records undated, 1819-1991 (bulk 1882-1935)
The Baron de Hirsch Fund Records document the organization's involvement in the planning of agricultural communities across the United States and to some extent in South America; the founding and administrative dealings of agricultural and trade schools; the establishment of the Jewish Agricultural Society; and the business records of the Fund itself. In addition, the collection documents the protection offered to immigrants through port work, relief, temporary aid, promotion of suburban industrial enterprises and removal from urban centers through the Industrial Removal Office, land settlement, agricultural training, and trade and general education. In this respect, the collection is of major interest for Jewish genealogists as it documents a number of individual immigrants. In addition, the collection contains documentation on the administration and organization of the fund, documentation on Jewish farming colonies such as the Jewish Agricultural Society, Woodbine Colony and Agricultural School, and documentation on the Baron de Hirsch Trade School. In addition, the collection contains blueprints and photographs of facilities.
