Collection consists mainly of letters and notes on routine financial and government matters. Correspondents include Daniel S. Dickinson, Gideon Granger, Cadwallader R. Colden, Francis Granger, Hamilton Fisk (on letterhead of the Department of State, Washington), L. P. Watson (on letterhead of the Executive Mansion, Albany), and Eliphalet Nott. One of the items from Hamilton Fisk is a letter appointing Dorman B. Eaton to the civil service (April 23, 1873); another is a letter to Charles B. Norton acknowledging his request for an appointment abroad (October 24, 1872). Also, two certificates of shares of stock in Western Emigrating Company issued to Roswell C. Otis on March 9, 1835.

Langdon's papers (chiefly 1775-1781) include business and political correspondence and letterbooks; U.S. governmental and financial records, including Ft. Ticonderoga inspection instructions and report (1775); accounts of the building of the ships Ranger and America and frigate Raleigh for the Continental Navy; New Hampshire governmental records; and a few general business records. Papers of William Whipple, judge, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Revolutionary military and political leader, who served in the Continental Congress (1776-1779), commanded New Hampshire militia in the Saratoga and Rhode Island campaigns, and was a close ally of Langdon, include correspondence, U.S. Congressional documents, and military and financial papers. The Elwyn family and other papers consist chiefly of letters to John Langdon's daughter, Elizabeth (Langdon) Elwyn, of Portsmouth and later Philadelphia, Pa., many from her children, but also from naval commander Isaac Chauncey, editor Charles King, and lawyer Timothy Upham, who managed her New Hampshire properties; papers of her husband, Thomas Elwyn, lawyer, including records of the John Moffatt estate and the subsequent legal case; some papers of the Elwyn children: Alfred W., John L., Thomas O., and William O., and some of their descendants, including members of the Stone family; 16 letters to Peter Livius; and a few papers of Tobias Langdon and other Langdon family members.

The collection is divided into two parts. The first contains the autograph collection of William S. Worth, who collected letters of prominent men, chiefly from New England and New York in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Most of the correspondence, 1765-1832, is of a routine nature though of interest is a letter, 1804 December 28, from Thomas Rodney re: the political situation in West Florida and a cover note, 1805 March 4, from William Eaton to James Madison re: a treaty with Mamet Bashaw. The second half of the collection consists of letters, 1891-1938, to Jefferson Randolph Kean, chiefly from noted medical colleagues on routine matters, although James Carroll Flippin queries Kean on the University of Virginia's influence on Walter Reed. Topics discussed include difficulty of enforcing postal regulations, challenges of roads and transportation of the day on delivery of mail, and undependable postmasters and contractors, including letter, 19 June 1812, in which Bacot chides a subcontractor for hiring James Warren Oliver, "the Stage driver who was convicted last year of robbing our northern mails in 1810..."; report, 5 Oct. 1811, of a tornado; and an illness of a postal contractor, reported 6 Sept. 1813, following a hurricane. Impact of the War of 1812 and the embargo and blockade of Charleston harbor also appear in this volume, including letters, 5 and 11 Oct. 1813, re Bacot's disapproval of published accounts of arrival in Charleson harbor of the U.S. sloop-of-war Argus with the captured British ship Barbadoes.
