Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963
Title:
Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963
The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

Burd-Shippen Papers, 1708-1792
Title:
Burd-Shippen Papers 1708-1792
James Burd (1726-1793) was well-known in colonial Pennsylvania through his role in the French and Indian War, as well as his connections to many of the colony's leading families (most notably the Shippen family). Initially starting out as a merchant in Philadelphia, Burd became increasingly involved with colonial affairs after moving to Lancaster County with his family in 1752. It would be on the frontier where Burd would make his mark first as a soldier, and later as a magistrate. The Burd-Shippen Papers consist mainly of letters and business documents sent to James Burd, with the bulk of the collection relating to the French and Indian War, 1754-1763, in which Burd served as an officer commanding troops at Fort Augusta and elsewhere. The 2.5 linear feet in the collection reflects all aspects of Burd's life in Pennsylvania as a merchant, soldier, and magistrate; as well as his involvement with the Shippen family professionally and personally. Intermixed with items sent to Burd are receipts to his wife Sarah Shippen Burd, and correspondence between Edward Shippen and James Hamilton regarding land matters and Indian affairs in Lancaster.

Timothy Horsfield Papers, 1684, 1733-1771
Title:
Timothy Horsfield Papers 1684, 1733-1771
An early settler and prominent citizen in the Moravian heartland near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Timothy Horsfield was named justice of the peace when Northampton County was formed out of Bucks in 1752, and was one of those given responsibility for the defence of the local white and Christian Indian populations during the French and Indian War. The Horsfield Papers offer a window onto the tumultuous history of northeastern Pennsylvania during the 1750s and 1760s. Comprised largely of correspondence and related documents between Horsfield, William Parsons, and provincial and military authorities, the collection includes important information on the Indian assaults on the region in 1756 and 1757 and the military and diplomatic response.

A portion of the collection is made up of materials collected by Thomas Balch while he was writing Les Français en Amérique..., 1777-1783: original manuscripts of "Episodes de la Guerre maritime de l'Indépendence Américaine," by Du Petit Thouars, and "Mémoire du Marquis de Vaudreuil au Marquis de Duquesne," 1755; copies of "Mémoires du Comte de Grasse sur le combat naval, le 12 avril 1782," "Relation du voyage du Prince de Broglie, 1782," "Depuis mon depart de France, 26 mars 1781 au 18 nov. de la même année quand l'armée aux ordres de M. le Comte de Rochambeau est entrée dans le quartier d'hiver" (probably written by Cromot du Bourg, one of Rochambeau's aides), "Correspondance de M. de Kalb avec le duc de Choiseul du 20 avril 1767 du 10 février 1796," etc. A list of names of French and English officers in the American Revolution, 1779-1783, appears in the volume with the Du Petit Thouars manuscript. The interest of Thomas Willing Balch in international law is represented by correspondence, 1892-1918, relating to the use of arbitration as an instrument of international policy; papers relative to the arbitration of the Alabama Claims, 1864-1872; material on Alaskan boundaries, Jan. 14, 1854 to May 20, 1854. With the exception of a few incidental items, the rest of the collection contains family papers and documents pertaining to the history of colonial Pennsylvania. These include: photostats of the will, inventories of the estate, and some of the correspondence of Thomas Willing, 1776-1820; miscellaneous correspondence, invitations, 1857-1923; a group of etchings of French and American officers of the Revolution; letters and documents, 1699-1805, pertaining to social, political, and religious affairs, to the French and Indian War, and grand jury charges. Material of an equally miscellaneous nature is contained in letters and documents, 1717-1923: "Journal of occurrences while in Europe," July 10, 1815-July 10, 1816, signed by H. B. Wilson; "A Theme of Verbs," by Edward Shippen, 1768; Balch family correspondence with members of the Shippen and Swift families, 1752-1830; and Swift and Willing family correspondence, 1743-1882.

The collection consists primarily of the papers of the Burd, Hubley, Patterson, Schall, and Shippen families. The principal authors are Edward Shippen, Sr., Edward Shippen, Jr., and Edward Burd. An additional, significantly represented correspondent is James B. Hubley. Historically prominent letter writers include: David Bacon, Owen Biddle, William Bradford, Benjamin Chew, George Clymer, Tench Coxe, John Dickinson, Josiah Dickinson, Henry Drinker, John Fothergill, Reuben Haines, Thomas Holme, Benjamin Levy, James Logan, Timothy Matlack, Thomas McKean, Anthony Morris, Israel Pemberton, John Penn, William Plumsted, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Nicholas Scull, and Conrad Weiser. The collection as a whole provides an important view, especially of 18th- but also of 19th-century Philadelphia. The greatest emphasis of the collection is on legal matters within the range of cases appearing before the Pennsylvania courts: divorce, assault, trespassing, murder, theft, counterfeiting, burglary, and property. There are also personal financial accounts, which provide a picture of life in 18th-century Philadelphia for people of means.
