Breckinridge, Jefferson,. Papers of the Key, Cutts, and Turner families [manuscript], 1808-1859.
Title:
Papers of the Key, Cutts, and Turner families [manuscript], 1808-1859.
In a series of pious letters, Francis Scott Key gives his daughter, Ann Arnold Key Turner, religious advice and sends her home news. There are some poems by Key including "Celebration hymn." The papers also include many letters to Ann Arnold Key Turner from her husband, Daniel Turner, and a letter from her to Jefferson Breckinridge explaining that her father was not an abolitionist. In another letter of interest Charles Howard describes the public mourning after the death of Francis Scott Key. Of special interest are a series of letters from Richard Cutts to his father Thomas Cutts describing the Embargo, the War of 1812, and the peace negotiations. The collection also includes Key and Turner family genealogies, a commonplace book of Ellen Lloyd Key and The life of O Possum, a children's story by Daniel Murray Key, whose death in a duel is mentioned in several letters and clippings. Correspondents include Stephen Decatur, John Young Mason, and Richard Rush.

Title:
Letter : Georgetown, to Thomas Ellicott, Baltimore, 1819 Dec. 10.
Concerned with Key's participation in the plans of the American Colonization Society for establishing free Blacks in a land of their own in Africa. He writes of chartering a ship which will take a colony to Sherbro Island. This was the Society's first major project before colonization schemes came to be seen as a way to remove Blacks from America and evade the issue of slavery.

Teackle, Severn. Autograph letter signed : Baltimore, to Phillip Wallis (in Easton, Talbot County, Md.), 1814 Sept. 23.
Title:
Autograph letter signed : Baltimore, to Phillip Wallis (in Easton, Talbot County, Md.), 1814 Sept. 23.
Giving an eyewitness description of the British bombardment of Fort McHenry ten days before. At the end of the letter, Teackle writes: "We have a song composed by Mr. Key of G. Town which was presented to every individual in the Fort in a separate sheet--you may have seen it as it has been published--if not at some future day I will show it you ..." This is an extremely early reference to Francis Scott Key's poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry," Which we know today as "The Star-spangled Banner." Key began writing the words during the night of 13/14 September 1814 as he witnessed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, and finished them by 17 September. A broadside of the poem was published between 17 and 19 September, under the title "Defence of Fort M'Henry," and the poem was printed in two Baltimore newspapers on 20 and 21 September; Teackle's letter apparently refers to the broadside. Probably not later than about 19 October, and certainly before 18 November 1814, Key's poem, set to John Stafford Smith's tune "To Anacreon in Heaven," was published by Thomas Carr of Baltimore.

Title:
John Taylor of Caroline letters to James Garnett [manuscript], 1809.
In a letter, 1809 January 23, Taylor asks Garnett to pay Duane and Binns for paper subscriptions; notes that no one can predict what will happen next politically so are all "either singing or croaking...like frogs in muddy water"; hopes that Garnett will soon announce that he is seeking re-election to Congress; and asks if Key will argue his suit. In a letter, 1809 February 6, Taylor discusses the publishing of one of his letters by Ritchie, his refusal to have Stanard publish one, and two subsequent letters answering charges he had changed his politcs; his fears that the U.S. will be goaded into war with Great Britain and the form of government be subverted as people now think wise a war they earlier thought a folly; and a request to forward some money to Dr. Mease.

The collection forms part of Series 10, which consists mainly of music manuscripts: non-autograph originals and photocopies of both non-autographs and autographs. It also includes rental materials and some arrangements by other composers. Briefly stated, all music materials for the works of Weill other than those offered for sale by publishers are included, whether in score or parts, as long as they present his music without fundamentally altering its character. (For more details on inclusion/exclusion, see the record for the whole series--"Music sources for the works of Kurt Weill ...," ID NYWS94-A2.) Materials on Mine eyes have seen the glory consist of photocopies of copyist's vocal scores of The battle hymn of the Republic, The star-spangled banner, and America.

John Bohlen Collection, 1889-1912
Title:
John Bohlen Collection 1889-1912
Born in Schiffdorf (near Bremerhafen), John Bohlen became one of Philadelphia's most prominent merchants at the turn of the nineteenth century. Running a profitable concern in partnership with his brother Bohl (1754-1836), John Bohlen imported commodities from their native Holland. Thanks to an insatiable American thirst for gin, Bohlen amassed an immense fortune that enabled him to travel in the same social circles as Stephen Girard and others among the mercantile elite and to win a spot in 1816 as one of the Directors of the Bank of the United States. By the time of his death, he was one of only eleven Philadelphians whose personal estates exceeded one million dollars in value. The Bohlen Collection contains a scant ten letters that appear to have been retained, as much as anything, for their autograph interest. Although they shed relatively little light on the life of John Bohlen, they do offer interesting glimpses into the personalities of Bohlen's famous correspondents, including Stephen Girard, Francis Scott Key, Meriwether Lewis, Virgil Maxcy, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Timothy Pickering.
