Title:
ALsS : to Henry and Emily Swan, 1855-1887 (bulk 1875-1883).
Letters to Henry Swan and his wife Emily. The first 20 letters, written in 1855, 1856, 1865, 1873, and 1875, concern Swan's art studies and illustration work for Ruskin. The bulk of the letters deal with the Museum of St. George: its establishment, building, furnishings, collections, displays, cataloging, finances, and abortive plans for moving to other sites. There is also much about other aspects of the Guild of St. George, especially the purchase of land and buildings for its agricultural communities. The letters also include many references to Ruskin's travels and writings, especially Fors clavigera, and to his health and the Swans' family life. Also included are two letters to Ruskin, one from Henry Swan and one from Frederic J. Shields. Each letter is followed by a typed transcript with hand-rubricated initial capitals and occasional notes. Three volumes include typescript introductions signed by William S. Allen, son of Ruskin's publisher George Allen.
