Title:
Autograph letter signed : Woodford, to Arthur Moore, Thursday night [1889 Jan. 3].
Critically reviewing Zola's Le Rêve at length, providing a close reading of a the extreme unction scene. Stating that "it is Zola at his best -- & I hope you will admit that Zola at his best stands above all other novelists living or dead." Concluding the discussion on Zola and the extreme unction scene by alluding to Dowson's future Catholic conversion, noting "I think if I have a death-bed (wh. I don't desire) I must be reconciled to Rome for the sake of that piece of ritual." Suddenly recalling a quotation "Les femmes sont faites pour commercer avec nos faiblesses, avec notre folie, mais non avec notre raison," mentioning that he is "thinking partly of the article [Moore] mentioned by Lucas Malet -- partly on what a double life -- (triple possibly?) -- one leads." Distinguishing this as something "more subtle" than the "Jeckyll & Hyde business," and discussing womankind and sexual relationships at length. Stating: "Depend upon it there is something radically weak in a woman's brain. One should only know them carnally -- I doubt if one can know them otherwise -- & that is why the hot blooded, entirely sensual men are not puzzled by them as we others whom the devil of analysis has entered into." Concluding that the world would be charming if they did not exist "or rather if they never grew into their teens." Noting that "one might adopt a child & cease to trouble about them -- only then she would grow up ..." Inviting Moore to call on Saturday when they "will ignore the existence of the sex altogether."

Roberts, Kenneth Lewis, 1885-1957. Papers: 1911-1947.
Title:
Papers: 1911-1947.
The collection consists chiefly of page proofs and correspondence. Bound page proofs (2 vols.), annotated and corrected, are of Moreau de St. Mʹery's American Journey, 1793-1798 as translated and edited by Kenneth Roberts and Anna M. Roberts, 1947. The preface, which explains the reason for the translation, is by Kenneth Roberts, and the introduction is by Stewart L. Mims. Moreau de St. Mʹery emigrated to Philadelphia from France during th French Revolution. Roberts first learned of him while doing research for the historical novel, Lydia Bailey, and felt that the Frenchman's astute observations of early American life in Voyage de Saint-Mʹery aux Etats-Unis de lAmʹerique, 1793-1798 merited an English translation. With the page proofs is Roberts's bookplate, in a design which was also used for some of his postcards. Correspondence consists of both personal and business letters, many sent from Roberts's home in Kennebunkport, Me. Personal letters include 2 sent to his friend, Franklin P. Adams. In the first (1911 Dec. 20), Roberts thanks Adams for his gift of a book by Arnold Bennett. In the second (1918 Sept. 21), written while en route to Siberia on an army intelligence assignment during World War I, Roberts tells about the trip and asks about friends and organizations back in Washington, D.C. Business letters and postcards from Roberts include those communicating with descendants of revolutionary war soldiers (1930), accepting a writing assignment (1939), declining permission to translate his old works (1939), requesting several books from Mr. Solle, a Michigan bookshop owner (1944), and replying to letters about his work. In these replies, Roberts offers opinions on a variety of literary and historical topics. Replying to Dr. Kronovet (1937), Roberts expresses an unfavorable opinion of American realists, commenting that they were just imitators of Zola. In a letter to Walter S. Funnell (1941), Roberts gives his opinion on a particular battle of the American Revolution and recommends a chapter on the subject in Charles Francis Adams's book, Studies Military and Diplomatic, 1775-1865. Also included is a letter (1945) to E.J. Halter in which Roberts discusses the nature of book collecting, expressing the view that it is better to collect books for enjoyment, whatever their edition than simply to hunt for rare first editions. He states his own enjoyment of Arnold Bennett's works and his dislike of his own first edition of Arundel. Roberts also specifies some different editions of Northwest Passage, Oliver Wiswell, and Rabble in Arms for Halter to purchase, compare and see which he preferred. With the correspondence is an autographed quotation beginning "The southwest wind brought us...." from Rabble in Arms.

Discussing personal matters, with many references to Dowson's health and mental health, his dining and theater engagements, his interest in the child actress Minnie Terry, and his relationship with Adelaide Foltinowicz ("I have broken my heart over her, but she remains, none the less, my soul interest in life," MA 1625.167), at one point comparing his life to Murger's Scénes de la Vie de Bohéme (MA 1625.1). With many letters related to his collaboration with Moore on four novels ("The Passion of Dr. Ludovicus" (unpublished), "Felix Martyr" (never completed), "A Comedy of Masks," (published 1893) and "Adrian Rome" (published 1899)), discussing plans and strategies for collaboration, as well as plot points and characters. Many letters also discussing Dowson's own work on poems, short stories, translations, and attempts at publication, with numerous references to his writers' block and difficulty writing, and with letter including a draft of his poem "Amor Umbratilis" (MA 1625.113).

Artinian, Artine, 1907-2005. Artine Artinian Collection, 1785-1963.
Title:
Artine Artinian Collection, 1785-1963.
The Artine Artinian Collection of French literary manuscripts represents over thirty years of meticulous accumulation by the distinguished Maupassant scholar. The collection focuses on French writers of the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with the largest segment devoted to Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893); however, both earlier and later materials are also present. Series I. Papers of Artine Artinian contains a single box of Artinian's own personal papers, which have been further subdivided into works and correspondence. The works are primarily composed of drafts for book reviews. Series II. French Literary Manuscripts Collected by Artine Artinian comprises the literary works and correspondence of writers collected by Professor Artinian. These are arranged alphabetically by author, and subdivided into works, correspondence and followed by miscellaneous materials, if any. The largest category is devoted to Maupassant, with much of the material the result of Artinian's survey of modern writers concerning the French author's legacy. Other writers represented in this collection include Honoré de Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, Anatole France, Marcel Proust, Rémy de Gourmont, Rachilde, George Sand, Paul Verlaine, and Émile Zola among others.

Reminding Zola that they met at a lunch with the editor Heinemann, at his club in London, and praising extravagantly Zola's reporting on the Dreyfus affair in France; saying that he joins "_all_ our colleagues of the pen ... and of the soul" in a "communal outcry" and that all of England and all of America are "inflamed and indignant" [at the treatment of Alfred Dreyfus]; and praising Zola's "rare and solitary courage."

Title:
Papers of Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen [manuscript], 1867-1895.
The collection contains four poems and sonnets by Boyesen, correspondence with admirers, publishers, other authors and friends, and a photograph. The centerpiece of the collection is a group of 13 letters in German by author Friedrich Spielhagen of Berlin, known to Boyesen from his years in Germany. The friends help one another with the translation and publication of their literary output in either America or Germany and discuss a wide variety of subjects and problems, particularly political, social, and health. Other correspondence includes two letters from Louise d'Alq, a French translator, regarding Boyesen's "Gunnar" and the possibility of future translations, and two letters from Archbiship Michael Augustine Corrigan concerning charges of Tammany Hall connections made and retracted by Boyesen. Specific topics in the correspondence include thoughts on evolution, travels to Russia, the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, Goethe, realism and naturalism in literature particularly in the works of Ibsen and Zola, and Spielhagen's friendship with Carl Schurz. In addition there are 45 letters and fragments in Norwegian.
