Letter, 1882, Feb. 23, Saint-Amand, France, to Emile Zola.

Cler, an admirer and defender of Zola's "naturalism", relates details of C. Duverdy's life bearing on politics, journalism, the law and "Pot Bouille", to picture their cumulative effect on Duverdy's personality. Letter contains material of historical interest, and cites specific persons upon the contemporary scene to illustrate Cler's contentions. The letter provides sonme background leading to an unmentioned lawsuit against Zola because of possible reference to Duverdy in "Pot Bouille".
