English field marshal.
British statesman and army officer.
British general and statesman.
British army officer and statesman.
Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), the field-marshal and statesman. For fuller details of his life and achievements see the Dictionary of National Biography .
Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, was a British soldier and statesman most remembered for his role in the defeat of Napoleon. A poor student, he was a natural soldier, cautious, calculating, and disciplined; he was the victorious commander of the Peninsular War, and along with the Prussian von Blücher, defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. A conservative Tory politician, he made a reluctant and rather unpopular Prime Minister, passing the Catholic Emancipation bill but opposing parliamentary reform.
British field-marshal and statesman.
Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) was an Anglo-Irish soldier and statesman. He rose to the rank of Field Marshal during the Napoleonic Wars and commanded the forces that defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Subsequently he served twice as Prime Minister and was a leading figure in the House of Lords.
Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, the hero of Waterloo was appointed Constable of the Tower of London in 1827. Although the position was a sinecure, and the actual administration was traditionally carried by a staff officer, Wellington took his responsibilities seriously and closely supervised the Tower Major J.H. Elrington. He regulated recruiting of the Tower staff, had the menagerie removed, and oversaw the restoration of the Tower after the fire of 1841 and construction of the North Bastion designed to enforce the Tower in case of a possible resurrection.
British soldier and statesman and leading military and political figure who gained prominence during the Napoleonic Wars.
Wellington was a British Army officer and briefly served as prime minister (1828-1830; Nov. 1834-Dec. 1834).

Title:
Autograph letter signed : Stratfield Saye, to Lady Chesterfield, 1841 Dec. 12.
Regarding her wish that he appoint her brother as Aide de Camp which, to men that have served in the Army, is "not very unlike the recommendation of a Lady to a Gentleman for his wife!"; suggesting that "such things may be done. But they are very rare; and are always disliked; and if possible resisted and refused"; indicating that before making a decision, he would prefer to find out who is likely to be his own successor and discuss the matter with him; expressing his pleasure at hearing positive news of his godson and advising her to give him the best education possible "even if he should never do anything but amuse himself" because "he will do so more to his own satisfaction; and will be a better man."

Title:
Collection of Gerald John Kane - Literary, 1571-1951.
This collection is what is known as an autograph collection and Kane spent years, not only collecting autographs of famous people on his own, but also acquiring the collections of other autograph seekers. This material spans multiple centuries and formats: from a 15th century manuscript on vellum to a 1951 typewritten letter. The collection includes accounts, letters, photographs, poems, government papers and royal proclamations, signed by, among others, actors and actresses, authors, explorers, kngs, magicians, queens, politicians, scientists, singers, and soldiers. Many of the famous people in this collection are also to be found in other manuscript collections in the Huntington Library. The majority of the material consists of manuscripts, letters and documents written, or signed, by famous people from the 17th-early 20th centuries; some of the material consists of only fragments or signatures, collected for the autograph value only. Among the correspondents are: Lyman Abbott, Zoë Akins, Henry Mills Alden, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, John Douglas Sutherland Campbell (Duke of Argyll), Charles Babbage, Joanna Baillie, Alice Stone Blackwell, John Bright, Richard Temple Brydges (Duke of Buckingham and Chandos), José Francisco Correia da Serra, Rebecca Harding Davis, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Annie Fields, J.T. Fields, Richard Watson Gilder, W.E. Gladstone, Grace Greenwood, Anna Maria Hall, Samuel Carter Hall, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Irving, Julia Marlowe, Thomas Power O'Connor, Arthur Wellesley Peel (Viscount Peel), Kate Sanborn, Sir Walter Scott, Upton Sinclair, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Queen Victoria, and Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington). The collection also includes a small number of Ecclesiastical and Financial documents, and a larger amount of Legal, Military, and Misc. documents. The documents include accounts, certificates, commissions, Letters Patent, marriage settlements, receipts, special marriage licenses, wills, and warrants. One of the documents is related to Queen Victoria, and others are signed by various kings of France.

Connolly, Arthur T. (Arthur Theodore), d. 1933. The Irish Repeal campaign cartoon collection.
Title:
The Irish Repeal campaign cartoon collection. ca. 1800-1850.
Illustrating opposing attitudes to the 1800 Act of Union which created a legislative union between England and Ireland. Three anti-union cartoons published in Dublin flatteringly portray Daniel O'Connell, (Irish statesman, founder in 1840 of the Repeal Association which sought restoration of the Irish parliament), in his struggle against English rule as personified by Arthur Wellesley, (Duke of Wellington, British Prime Minster, 1828-1830, 1834), and Sir Robert Peel, (Prime Minister, 1834-1835, 1841-1846). Accompanying O'Connell in two cartoons is a figure that may represent Thomas Osborne Davis, (Irish writer, organizer of the Young Ireland movement, founder of the pro-repeal newspaper, The Nation). In contrast, a fourth cartoon, by English caricaturist, George Cruikshank, represents O'Connell as an ax-wielding bully attempting to sever the hands of England and Ireland united in friendship. The final item, a damaged election flier entitled, "Under the British Flag," depicts Liberal policies favorably in comparison to those of the Tories (Conservatives).

Letters : to Lady Sarah Archer Amherst, 1812, June 20-1816, Aug. 31.
Fourteen letters, most accompanied by a typed transcript, from Addington to Lady Sarah Amherst of Montreal, Kent, England. Addington wrote from Cadiz, Zerbst, Liege, Paris, Zurich, London and Berne. In most of the letters Addington related news and developments in the German campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. He mentioned prominent political and military figures, including Louis XVIII, Napoleon, Soult, Blucher, Ney, and the Duke of Wellington. The author described the return of King Louis XVIII from exile, the desertion of Allied troops to L'Armee du Nord, and the brave performance of the Swiss soldiers. Addington vehemently expressed his contempt for the people of France and the state of their country, and his admiration for the Swiss. In two passages he described the social behavior of Swiss women.

Wellesley writes to Anne, 26 July 1809, from a ship off Ushant bound for Cadiz, telling her of taking three Danish vessels, which allowed him the opportunity to send a letter. He reports that the best school to educate boys intended for the Navy is the Naval College ot Portsmouth, and advises her to send William there immediately, and not allow him to remain idle any longer; he will pay expenses. Title:
Diary, 1830 Sep 1 - 1831 Sep 23.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a daily journal in which the writer records his religious and social activities as well as current political events. He reports assiduously on his active religious life, attending brotherly meetings; prayer meetings; and church meetings, during which he hears sermons and describes their contents, praising an American preacher's sermon and criticizing that of Captain Stewart, who advocates the immediate emancipation of slaves. He also records the events of his weekly teaching at Sunday School and notes that on September 14, 1831 a jubilee of Sunday Schools was held in honor of the birthday of the founder of Sunday Schools, Robert Raikes. He also describes teas and dinners with friends and family; a birthday supper for himself to celebrate his 21st year; and goes to the theater, exhibitions put on by the Society of Arts, and concerts. In vol. 2, he mentions that he has completed 2 of his 4 years of apprenticeship with Mr. Drake. Elsewhere, he mentions the arrest of Chidlaw, the publisher of the Argus; and comments throughout the diaries on the progress of the Reform Bill; commends the activities of the Birmingham Political Union to petition the King to dismiss the current ministers; and reports on resignation of the Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington and Robert Peel.

Title:
British Correspondence and Miscellany Collection, 1556-1972 and n.d. [bulk 1740-1890].
The materials comprising the British Correspondence and Miscellany Collection are dated from 1556 to 1972 (bulk 1740-1890). The papers are arranged into the following series: Correspondence, 1556-1972 and n.d.; Subject Files, 1699-1902 and n.d.; Pictures, 1795-1921 and n.d.; and Miscellaneous Material, 1814-1841 and n.d. An artificial collection, the papers are, for the most part, unrelated by provenance. The collection consists chiefly of correspondence, and topics include numerous political events and activities of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries in Great Britain and the colonies (particularly India and Africa). The Correspondence Series includes numerous letters to and from British notables. Enhanced access to individual correspondents by name can be attained by searching the finding aid on the Web. Among the items in the Correspondence Series are a copy of John Bright's 1851 speech entitled "Papal Aggression" (Bright correspondence); material regarding the Horseguards (Brownrigg correspondence); a testimonial to the character of Sir Francis Burdett written by Lady Hester Stanhope (Burdett correspondence); a letter regarding Wellington's correspondence concerning a transport ship wrecked in the Tagus during his last Iberian campaign (Canning correspondence); letters from David Dundas, including two accompanying circulars (1804 and 1805) from the War Office (Dundas correspondence); correspondence (and accompanying transcripts) between King George I and M. Braconnier (1709) concerning the King's inability to send a detachment large enough to oppose the French along the borders of the Rhone and Lake Geneva (George I correspondence); correspondence relating to George Henry's mission in Nyasaland (Henry correspondence); material concerning the cargo ship "The Sea Witch" (Lenty correspondence); correspondence regarding Marsden-Smedley's unsuccessful campaign for Parliament in 1910 (Marsden-Smedley correspondence); and Wellesley's transcript of a testimonial to the character of Charles Wyatt written by the Governor General of India (Wellesley correspondence). The Murray correspondence includes handwritten biographical notes and a printed review (1908) of David Christie Murray's Reflections. Papers in the Subject Files Series concern a wide range of political, military, and economic matters. They include an anonymous account (1743) of the battle of Dettingen (in French); papers (1856-1860 and n.d.) relating to the raising of ships at Sebastopol during the Crimean War; a collection of letters from various correspondents concerning decimal currency (1856-1869); papers concerning Newfoundland fisheries (1901-1902); and a document pertaining to the impressment of sailors (1745).

Dashwood, Charles, 1787-1832. Journal in Portugal, Spain and France, November 1812 to April 1814.
Title:
Journal in Portugal, Spain and France, November 1812 to April 1814.
Manuscript diary, in pen and brown ink, kept by British army officer Charles Dashwood during his service as officer of the 3rd Foot Guards in the Peninsular War. The diary is entirely in Dashwood's hand, with dates and page numbers neatly and consistently recorded throughout. Pages of the diary are tied together with a pink ribbon in the upper left-hand corner. Leaves containing pages 25-28 have been excised. The diary begins with Dashwood's departure for Lisbon on the Queen Charlotte packet on 4 November 1812 and ends with news of peace on 15 April 1814, when "the white flag was hoisted in acknowledgement of the new order of things". Dashwood's narrative includes descriptions of the Battle of Vitoria, the siege of Pamplona, Wellington's victory at Sorauren (which prevented Soult and Drouot from relieving the French forces in Pamplona and ended the French counter-offensive) and the actions in the Nive and Nivelle, the closing battles of the Peninsular War. Dashwood also describes a journey to Zaragoza (to deliver some private papers) soon after the French had been forced out of that area. In Zaragoza he was entertained by General Mina, the well-known guerrilla leader, who was "very civil to us, he appears about 45 years of age, with a fine eye and an open countenance". On his return to headquarters at St. Jean de Luz, Dashwood describes a meeting with Wellington, for whom he later carries out another mission by escorting a French family to Hendaye. Four loose items, consisting of one letter, two maps, and one graphite sketch, accompany the diary. The letter, dated 25 December 1813, is an official (partially printed) notice of promotion, raising Dashwood from the rank of captain to lieutenant colonel. The two maps, both signed by Dashwood, depict territory near the Spanish city of Badajoz, on the river Guadiana. Both maps are executed in pen and black ink, with rivers, roads, and towns articulated in blue, brown, and pink watercolors. The graphite sketch depicts a musician (perhaps a Spanish lutenist) with another man, seated on the ground.

Watts, Jane (Waldie), 1793-1826. Journal of a four months' absence from England, in the summer of 1815 - including a tour in Flanders, Holland, and France; and a short residence at Brussels and Paris, [ca. 1825-1826].
Title:
Journal of a four months' absence from England, in the summer of 1815 - including a tour in Flanders, Holland, and France; and a short residence at Brussels and Paris, [ca. 1825-1826].
Holograph journal, with numerous corrections in pencil, of the writer's travels in Flanders, Holland, France, Brussels, and Paris with her siblings John and Charlotte. Many of her observations concern social activities and military scenes, especially concerning Napoleon Bonaparte. She describes the characters of her fellow passengers, including Sir Neil Campbell, going to Belgium as an extra Aide de Camp to the Duke of Wellington; and numerous other military men. On a boat to Ghent, she meets an English officer on his way to Flanders to fight Napoleon, and who has been posted away from his family for 10 years. In Ghent, she goes to the theater, where she describes the dress of the audience but is disappointed in the play itself; in Utrecht, she visits the botanical gardens, but though she finds the flowers pretty, does not much care for gardens; she also visits churches and admires the artwork within them. The manuscript also includes a lengthy description of a visit to the battlefield of Waterloo, where she notes the "rude graves" and other detritus of battle, especially the papers which litter the field, where she picks up as a souvenir a letter written from a soldier's wife to her husband, and recounts details of the battle itself. On leaving Cambray, their carriage is threatened by "ruffians"; in France, she admires the statues in the Louvre and describes her impressions upon seeing English troops encamped in the Bois de Boulogne; visits the Tuileries, where she imagines the "ex-emperor" Napoleon having designed his plans for Europe; attends the Grand Opera Francoise where the Duke of Wellington and Lord Castlereagh are also present; visits the National Library of France; and watches 65,000 soldiers pass in review before the Duke of Wellington on the plain of Clichy. The manuscript is prefaced by an introduction, signed J. W., Hendersyde Park, October 1815, in which the writer explains her motives for keeping a journal; apologizes for cursory allusions to private events which she did not feel right to commit to paper; and reminds her audience that the journal had been intended for her eyes only. The manuscript's corrections are evidently for printing; often, the corrections often strike through personal names. An earlier version of the second part of this journal is Osborn d185.

Title:
Correspondence regarding the Venezuelan wars of independence [manuscript], 1813.
The collection contains letters to the Duke of Gloucester on the subject of British interference in Venezuela and includes copies of letters from Venezuelan patriots. A contemporary copy of letter, 1813 February 16, José Joaquín Cortés y Madariaga, Public Prison, Cadiz, to [the Duke of Goucester?] describes the horrors of the La [Guaira?] dungeon in Caracas, calling for Great Britain to aid and mentioning Francisco de Miranda. A contemporary copy of a letter, 1813 March 13, José Servando de Mier Noriega y Guerra to Miguel Ramos Arizpe deplores the consequences of the non observance of the armistice between the Spanish under Juan Domingo Monteverde and the insurgents, and mentioning the spread of the insurgency under a "certain Bolívar." A copied extract of a letter "from an American Deputy of the Cortes of Spain," 1813 April 16, describes the Cortes' disapproval of Monteverde's lenient treatment of prisoners. Letters, 1813 April 12 and 22, May 19, October 13, December 2 and 5, and n.d., William Walton to the Duke of Gloucester and to Nicholas Vansittart, describe the harsh conditions of prisoners of war and urge the English to take action in Spanish America before the insurgents seek aid from the United States and France. Letter, 1813 October 18, December 2, Nicholas Van Sittart to the Duke of Gloucester, despairs of British interference and points out the Spanish treatment of Wellington.
