Autograph letter signed : Stratfield Saye, to Lady Chesterfield, 1841 Dec. 12.

Regarding her wish that he appoint her brother as Aide de Camp which, to men that have served in the Army, is "not very unlike the recommendation of a Lady to a Gentleman for his wife!"; suggesting that "such things may be done. But they are very rare; and are always disliked; and if possible resisted and refused"; indicating that before making a decision, he would prefer to find out who is likely to be his own successor and discuss the matter with him; expressing his pleasure at hearing positive news of his godson and advising her to give him the best education possible "even if he should never do anything but amuse himself" because "he will do so more to his own satisfaction; and will be a better man."
