Blunden was an English poet and scholar.
Edmund Blunden, English poet and university teacher. His highly acclaimed biography of Shelley was published in 1946.
Edmund Blunden was born in London on November 1, 1896. In 1900, his family moved to Yalding in Kent. He was schooled at local schools until the age of twelve, when he was sent to boarding school at Christ's Hospital in Sussex. He won a scholarship to Oxford but in 1915, before he completed his studies, he enlisted in the army. In spring 1916 he joined the Royal Sussex Regiment and saw action in France. He won a Military Cross for a reconnaissance mission under constant fire. He was released from duty in 1919, having served two years in the trenches. In 1918 he married Mary Daines. In the years immediately following the war, he sent some poems to the Daily Herald. Through this contact, he met Seigfried Sassoon and began a long friendship with him. He returned to Oxford, but with a family to support he left to work at The Athenaeum and The Nation in London. He published his first book of poems, The Waggoner, in 1920. Also in 1920 he collected and published poetry by John Clare. He named his next two children, Clare and John, for the poet. Perhaps suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, Blunden continued to write. Literary research interests and publishing poetry took away from study time. Publishing poetry and working part-time also could not support his family. In addition, his relationship with Mary was deteriorating, so he accepted a professorship in English at Toyko University, where he served from 1924 to 1927. Mary did not go with him. While in Japan, he wrote Undertones of War, a memoir. He continued to write and associate with the literati of the day and his literary reputation grew, but he was unhappy in his personal life. He filed for divorce from Mary in 1929. He had had an affair with his secretary in Japan, Aki Hayashi and, though the affair was over before he left Japan, he brought her back to London with him and set her up in a flat. During this time, in addition to his poetry, he published works about Leigh Hunt and poems of Wilfred Owen. In 1931 his divorce from Mary was finalized. Also in that year, he took up a tutoring position at Oxford. In 1933 he married Sylva Norman, a writer at The Nation. This marriage also did not last and they separated in the fall of 1939. He continued to write poetry, prose, biographies, and essays. He married Claire Poynting in 1945 with whom he eventually had four more daughters. Blunden was opposed to war and had a difficult time during and after World War II. He tried to avoid politics but due to his pacifism he was labelled a Nazi, even though he served as an officer on the University's Officer Training Corps. In 1947 he was appointed cultural advisor to the liaison mission to Japan. He was kept busy in Japan with lectures with the result that his appointment was extended so that he did not return to England until 1950. At this time he went to work for the Times Literary Supplement. He was very active in the literary life of England between 1950 and 1953, but in September 1953 he moved his family to Hong Kong to accept the Vice Chancellorship of Honk Kong University. Life continued to be very busy, and he kept publishing. In 1969, he retired and returned to England, where he continued to write and publish and to receive awards. He died in 1974.

English poet and critic.
Edmund Blunden (1896-1974) was a highly regarded poet of World War One. He served as a second lieutenant in the Royal Sussex regiment. In Flanders, he witnessed action in the trenches and on the battlefield and was awarded the Military Cross. Although Blunden survived the war with no injuries, he lost several friends and was greatly affected by the toll on both human life and on the countryside. Many of his poems were written after the war.
After leaving the army in 1919, Blunden began a literary career, meeting Siegfried Sassoon, who became a lifelong friend. In addition to his work as a poet, he enjoyed a career as an editor, journalist, critic, and biographer (Bergonzi, ODNB ).

Morrell, Ottoline Violet Anne Cavendish-Bentinck, Lady, 1873-1938. Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Title:
Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Ottoline Morrell Collection, supplemented by a few holograph and typescript manuscripts by Morrell and other authors. Among the letters in this collection are many photographs and sketches provided by the authors to Morrell. The small Works Series contains holograph drafts of two articles by Morrell, the first a description of some of her memories of D. H. Lawrence and the other a review of an early critical work on Lawrence's writing. Also included are notes she took on a trip to Ireland in 1919. The Correspondence Series contains outgoing (1911-1938) and incoming correspondence (1894-1938). Outgoing correspondence is made up of holograph letters which Morrell wrote to her friends and acquaintances. There are a few letters written for fund-raising and other business purposes, but the majority are personal letters. Incoming correspondence forms the bulk of this collection with well over 2,500 letters, mostly personal, written to Morrell on various topics of art, politics, World War I, literature, and the gossip for which Bloomsbury was famous. Within this series 1,782 letters from Bertrand Russell thoroughly cover their lengthy relationship. Other accumulations of letters are present from Clive and Vanessa Bell, Augustine Birrell, Elizabeth Bowen, Dorothy Brett, Dora Carrington, John Cramb, T. S. Eliot, Mark Gertler, Frances Hackett, Augustus John, Henry Lamb, Frank Prewett, Siegfried Sassoon, Lytton Strachey, and many others. The Miscellaneous Series is divided between works, correspondence, and materials by Bertrand Russell. The works include poems and short essays by other authors, including a collection of poems by Frank Prewett. The correspondence portion contains letters between Morrell's friends and quite a few letters to Philip Morrell. Of particular note is the correspondence between Philip Morrell and Frieda Lawrence regarding the legal issues of D. H. Lawrence's estate. The final section contains works by Bertrand Russell and a number of letters from him to other people, including a group of letters to his brother written from prison.

Ussher, Arland. Arland Ussher correspondence, 1921-1959.
Title:
Arland Ussher correspondence, 1921-1959.
This collection of selected correspondence of Arland Ussher, philosopher, art critic, and Gaelic scholar, consists largely of over 200 letters between Joseph Hone, Irish critic and biographer, and Ussher. In addition there are letters from Edmund Blunden, Austin Clarke, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Jack Grene, Augustus John, William Kirkpatrick Magee, Sacheverell Sitwell, and Robert N.D. Wilson. The correspondence refers to philosophy, including that of Swift, Berkeley, Hegel, and Kant, the works of Joyce and Shaw as well as books by Ussher himself, including Face and Mind of Ireland. A typed copy of Yeats's "Crazy Jane and the King," which Ussher apparently intended to discuss in one of his books, is housed with some of the letters between Gogarty and Ussher. In addition, the holdings contain a 1953 letter from Ussher to Mr. Spicer-Simson about the latter's photographs of Ussher's medallions of Joyce, Shaw, and Yeats.

Title:
Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.

This collection is made up of eight series. Series I is comprised of correspondence, listed by name of correspondent, whether the letter is to or from Blunden. The letters are assumed to be from Blunden to the correspondent unless otherwise noted. There are several letters from and to third parties and this is noted in the entry. Series II is made up of essays written by Blunden. Series III is Miscellaneous, which contains such things as transcriptions of other writers' poetry by Blunden and a bibliography of Blunden's works. Series IV is an inventory of the pamphlets. These pamphlets are not shelved with the collection, but rather they are shelved with the Blunden books. Series V is made up of about forty photographs, mostly showing Blunden in intimate scenes, such as with his family at tea. Paul Engle and Somerset Maugham appear in photos with Blunden. Series VI is comprised of Blunden's poems, mostly handwritten in Blunden's meticulous script. Series VII is made up of reviews and Series VIII is speeches. The University of Iowa Special Collections Department also houses a collection of Blunden's books.
