Tennant was Siegfried Sassoon's lover and an intimate member of the "Bright Young Things" circle, which also included Cecil Beaton, the Mitfords, the Sitwells, Evelyn Waugh, etc. He was a model for Cedric Hampton in Nancy Mitford's Love in a Cold Climate and for Sebastian Flyte in Waugh's Brideshead Revisited. Philip Hoare wrote his biography (Serious Pleasures, Hamilton, 1990).
