Frederick Wilse Bateson was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Corpus Christi College, Oxford as well as a writer. He was born on Dec. 25, 1901 in Styal, Cheshire, England. Bateson married Jan Cancellor in 1931 and they had one son and one daughter. He was the editor of Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature between 1930 to 1940. From 1951 to 1974, Bateson was the founder and editor of Essays in Criticism (Quarterly). His other works include: English Comic Drama, 1700-1750 (1929), Towards a Socialist Agriculture (1946), A Guide to English Literature (1965), and Essays in Critical Dissent (1972). He died on Oct. 16, 1978.

Paul M. Zall is a retired English educator and consultant. He was born on Aug. 3, 1922 in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1948, Zall married Elisabeth Weisz and had 3 sons. The schools he taught at include: Harvard University (1950-51), Cornell University (1951-55), and California State College, Los Angeles (1957-86). His literary works include: Elements of Technical Report Writing (1962), Ben Franklin Laughing (1980), Wit and Wisdom of the Founding Fathers (1996), and Jefferson on Jefferson (2002).
